check engine light just came on.Error code po 492.Does anyone know what I can check myself ? 2008 xj8,thanks, Bob

Take a look at the causes, only you know what you can check yourself.

Possible causes of OBD code P0492
- Intake leak - Damaged AIR system components - Faulty AIR Solenoid Valve - Faulty AIR system relay

P0492 & AIR (air injection system)

Download the factory service manual for the XJ8 and go to section 3 labeled "powertrain" and go to page 1912 and read the section on the secondary air injection system which comprises the following components:AIR pumpAIR switching valve
AIR control valve
AIR vacuum reservoir
AIR pump relay
AIR pressure sensor (North American specification vehicles only)

Unfortunately I have a 2004 XJ8 and the svc. manual I have doesn't show a DTC of P0492 (or the similar P049200 which is the long version). Other sources point to that being the AIR system so oldmots is correct.

It's the typical emissions plumbing and related switches and sensors and aside from being hidden away in various nooks and crannies it shouldn't be particularly expensive as far as hardware is concerned just a lot of labor I suspect.

Any other codes that might indicate a lean or rich condition?
