Final drive oil change
Hello ,
Sure this question has already been posted and answered , but dont' find it on the forum
a lot of people spook about gear oil change ( very detailled and precide informations )
What about final drive , usually on my cars , I replace final drive oil at 100000 km ( sorry I use km not miles ! )
On the rear cover of the final drive there is an inscription " use only synthetic oil "
Does't it mean it is not the usual 80W90 gear oil ?
I also don't find the oil plug , maybe it is not make for oil change ?
Thanks for your help , and this great forum which seems to be the best way to find useful information's about our cars

I,too, have that same question. My 2004 is now 6 yrs old, has only 27+K, but has developed an occasional inside (esp to right) sound that reminds me of old posi rear ends that needed fresh additive. I am a DIY guy, so I called my local service dept, he told me to check bushings? But back to diff oil, neither the transmission or rear end oil, type, volume etc are readily listed. 1st vehicle I've ever owned that doesn't have this basic fluid information in the manual. Is it not worth servicing till 90000miles (200000 KM)?
BTW 1st issue, and minor at that in 6 yrs with this car and 3 with a 1998 XJ8!!

2 techs at the Jag dealership said, a non issue on these cars. No drain hole that I can see and the bushings are fairly common, yet easy to replace. I retorqued everything, found a few bolts that needed a tweek, we'll see how it does. Its rare but I was being prevention oriented. BTW for future reference, 1. what is the proper fluid?
2. I presume, we drill and tap a drain plug? fill on top? ie factory fill??

The only problem I have ever had on my 97 VDP is when the differential failed. I think it was at about 65,000 miles. The Jag dealer said it was dry as a bone in there... It basically burned up. Somehow the oil got out. Yet I had never seen a drop of oil on my garage floor. Very odd.
I'm now at 130k miles and am wondering if it should be changed, flushed, topped, whatever.
Any advice would be helpful.

The diff should be checked for leaks at every oil change. If there is any indication of weeping there, the level should be checked at the filler hole with the car level, fill until fluid runs out of the hole. Use 80W/90 synthetic gear oil. The pinion turns three times as fast as the axles so look at the seal there first. There is no drain hole, the synthetic fluid should last the life of the car. It can be sucked out the filler hole with an extractor if you are desperate.

I think I'll replace my oil and top it off.
Also - I accidentally posted this in the XJ8/XJ6 thread - whereas I should have placed it in the X300 section since my XJ6 is a 1997. Apparently there is a drain plug on the X300's?
