Fuel Fault
I got Fuel Fault - Fuel Pump unable to maintain pressure fault, or words to that effect, and the fuel gauge went to empty. I carried on driving and it flickered off and on a couple of times and then stayed on, so naturally thought I am running on the dregs and going to stop pretty soon but it didn't effect anything at all. I stopped for fuel and then it has gone away.
I looked it up in the handbook and that display isn't mentioned anybody know what it means?

Read this thread regarding the fuel pump and related issues if ones battery is low on voltage.

My fuel pump pressure is 55psi and it is a new battery only a month old. As I said it didn't affect the car at all but why did it come up on the centre message screen and is not listed in the handbook with all the other codes? Plus why did the fuel gauge 'switch off'? Weird!
Message was on the instrument cluster and there was no record of it when I plugged in my OBD2 gadget. I have a 2005 XJ8L. Hopefully Meirion is right but it is odd that if it comes up on the instrument cluster it is not mentioned in the book. Everything else is.
I'm not sure what message you are referring to so It is very hard to help you out.
All the fault messages that appear on the instrument cluster message center have an associated code that goes with them.
I would suggest you get the codes read with SDD as your generic scanner will not be able to read the Jag specific codes
If you can remember the message or get the codes read we can help you out from there
Cheers

OK the message reappeared. I was on near empty but the warning light not on when the fuel gauge switched off and the message Fuel Pump System Fault came up with the amber light. Stopped, switched off, restarted still there. Filled up with petrol and it went away. Does that help anyone out there?

Hi jamwilbat,
I can't find that particular Fuel Pump System Fault message in any of my documentation (DTC Summaries, Workshop Manual, Dealer Training Manual, etc.), but here are a few thoughts that may or may not be helpful:
1. The main fuel pump in the X350 is driven by a PWM signal from the Rear Electronic Module (REM) in the trunk, which is in turn instructed by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The fuel pump will not be instructed to run until the key passes the PATS key code check and the REM goes through a challenge-and-response authentication routine with the Instrument Cluster.
In other words, there is a lot of network communication going on. A standard OBDII scanner can only read most of the P or Powertrain fault codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes or DTCs). But several of the fault codes related to the fuel pump system are B (Body), U (Undefined, but mostly Network-related), and C (Chassis) codes, which your scanner probably cannot read.
I would suggest taking your car to a good independent Jaguar specialist who has the necessary equipment to read the Jaguar-proprietary codes that may be stored in your car's modules. If you find any B, U or C codes they will be helpful in narrowing down your diagnosis.
One possible cause is looseness or corrosion on one or more of the electrical connectors or ground points involved in the fuel pump's circuitry (of which there are many). It might help to begin by cleaning the connectors at the REM and fuel pump module, as well as at the associated ground studs. Note that the torque specification on the ground studs is just 6.5 ft. lbs., barely more than hand tight. Several members have accidentally snapped the threaded studs right off of the body by overtightening the ground nut.
Please keep us informed.
Cheers,
Don
Thanks for this Don very informative. I shall ask around to see if anyone here other than the Jag dealer who is also the GM dealer but might bite the bullet and take it to them.
I will let you know what I find. Funny it is not mentioned anywhere in the books.
Why can't I get the simple ones?
