Gearbox or suspension compressor?
Hi all, I bought a 2005 Jaguar XJ X350 with 170,000 km for about a month. During the test I did not notice anything but after a few days, with the windows down because the soundproofing is excellent, I hear like "scratching" from the front, it looks like the auto gearbox. It happens mostly uphill, the car goes up in jerks and it is as if it is muttering not continuously. There are noises like small scratches, it could be the suspension compressor that adjusts to the ground, I don't know.
any suggestions about it? Thanks
any suggestions about it? Thanks
The scratching from under the dashboard may be one of the plastic motors
which drive the speedometer etc. which are worn.
I have experienced it myself briefly and bought some replacement motors.
The other fault may be the usual torque converter locking and unlocking
when cold.

Left field thought....Could the scratching sound possibly be an induction air leak?
If the motor is torquing on the engine mounts as it is placed under load (going up hill), could deepblue be looking for something like a split in his air intake hose to the throttle body after the MAF sensor opening up, which might also give him the engine hesitancy effect?

Thanks for your valuable answers.
To try to understand better and try to investigate immediately with the help of the mechanic what the problem actually is, I ask you something more.
@meirion1, the scratching is not really under the dashboard but I feel it on the front of the car, I mean the engine or those parts.
I also wonder why there should be a scratch every now and then while riding in any conditions. I like to travel at a low speed, I like to enjoy driving and the car. It is difficult that my guide can create the conditions to solicit some element.
As for the torque converter I think you have hit the problem and that is what I will look at first, even if it is not the cold that has created problems, here there are still "warm" temperatures (14-22 degrees celsius).
@h2o2steam, an induction air leak... it is an interesting element to investigate. I will ask you to take a look at the items you have suggested.

Hi there hope you resolved the problem yet since it happened.
alternator scratching due to worn bearings?
Mine had that till it broke down , did a refurb for 250 and in addition to that , since it was quite easy an could be done as well , iI let the mecanic take the alternator out from underneath while exchanging the engine mounts below the engine plus the engine/ transmission mount, all were done anyway.
The new engine /transmission mount keeps the tranny in place and dampens movement in case of uphill downhill braking and accellerating.
I really felt a big difference difference

Thanks Petz, I haven't solved the problem yet, I noticed it in the past few days and as soon as I take it to the mechanic I will ask to check the alternator as well.
The dealership where I bought the car is far away and they will suggest someone closer to home to have it checked as it is still under warranty but I don't think they know the vehicle.
I've had a range rover P38 in the past and I know that if you don't know it it's useless and harmful to get your hands on it. I had to study a lot, I always turned to the forums from which I learned a lot, the shared experiences were perfect for solving problems.

Good your here
do you have a clunk from below when starting uphill or down hill. the tranny moving forward a bit or either backwards. That would be the transmission mount beeing shot.

What engine in it ? V8/ V6 or Diesel ,x350 vin starting G up to about 50000 or already x356 starting Vin would be H with the numbers following. Tranny are the same all over zf6hp26

from Zf
So that is then an x356 without the doorprotection stripe like the early model x350 2003-2005
and the screen washer liquid filler on the left side just underneath the front window correct?
i will check with s friend who hasa x 358 diesel and is working a lot on it .
other story ... the diesel engine is graet but you do have to make your oilchanges on time like every 10k km/ 6k miles
very important.
Now pull your gauge out look and smell. If it smells diesel out with it change do not drive .
diesel would dilute your oil . Risk of crank case breaking.
when oil change done only fill up till the middle of the gauge , if the amount rises over time instead of reducing it is diesel blowby

yes, the screen washer liquid filler is on the left side just underneath the front window.
Thank you for your suggestions, I had read about these same recommendations and had taken note of them, I am happy that they are certain and I will certainly follow them

I went to the mechanic, he tested the car and he told me that the noise I heard from the front is the suspension compressor that adapts to any surface. It still seems strange to me that you hear this little noise every time the car adapts to the road, it's the first time I hear it, what do you think? Can you also hear the compressor working while driving?
As for the jerks and small bumps uphill, he said it was the torque converter that was worn out and should be replaced. Where can I find it (in Europe) to buy?

The failing TQ will set a code?
Have you checked for one? Expensive to change if not the problem.
Has your compressor been rebuilt yet? I have NEVER heard this air compressor running unless I am standing by the front bumper and have someone else start the car. So I again would double check his suggestion? You can easily unhook the air compressor to check if that is the cause of the noise.
You really need to get the car scanned for error codes as just throwing expensive parts like a TQ at it may or may not fix your problems?

I'm not getting any trouble codes from the car, no messages of any problems. It's me who feels a slight drop in power at times and an abstraction at times when I go uphill, never on the flat.
I don't know if the compressor has been rebuilt, it seemed strange to me that I always hear noise from the front left when I'm driving on flat ground and that was the mechanic's explanation

Front left is where the compressor is hanging . Get the wheel of ,undoe the bumpershroud and have a try if it is fixed thight enough .
it is Hanging in three screws held by three nuts , below the compressor are two thin bent steel pieces, one on top of the other , rubber spring and rubber again and ntergrated .in those rubbers are washers with tube. The third hanging screw is near the bumper inside wall, does only have 2washers 2 rubbers and a spring the a nut
if the lower nuts are not tight enough it will tingle , vibration noise when it is running.
