I recently had a series of issues with my car. The alternator died and as part of resolving this it was replaced along with the battery. Whilst limping home with little electrical power the steering was really heavy,. The car now drives perfectly and is generating sufficient voltage and holding charge as expected.
An issue has arise, a coincidence (?) whereby my steering is heaving when parking, turning at very slow speeds, when you get going things seem quite normal. I have scanned the car using SDD and the following two codes were returned C1924 & C1922 which mention the Variable assist steering actuator. Does anyone have any experience of this issue and where the offending part/module might be located?
Sounds like you have lost the function of your steering assist transducer.
It is governed by your ECM to add or reduce power steering fluid movement to the steering rack assembly. Located directly on the side of the steering rack near the steering input shaft.
You should see a connector and pair of wires connecting to it.
It could have become disconnected or the wiring damaged during recent service activity.....certainly a good place to start.
It has been 20 years since I worked with steering torque sensors...
It MAY be your root cause: There is a such thing as steering torque sensor seems it is highlighted in attached pic optical steering sensor
This is a digital sensor, sends out pulse train. I am not sure about technology integration here. The sensor's output, or lack of it, can definitely interfere with amount of assist provided.
