Default Hello and possibly goodbye?

I've been a member of this forum for about 12 1/2 years, just looking at my forum statistics I was surprised to see I've commented 52 times, I was sure it was more like 10. I am not very handy with the wrenches so I've not had much to offer but I have benefitted immensely from the shared knowledge provided on this forum, it allowed me to tackle some jobs I never would have had the confidence to attempt without the contributions of this forum's members. I haven't participated much for the aforementioned reason but reading this forum has been a part of my morning coffee routine for over a decade, but I think it may have come to an end.

For the past few weeks I've had and ABS fault, the error code indicated a rear passenger side wheel sensor problem which normally I would have tackled but life got in the way and I had some other niggly problems with the car I wanted addressed so this week I arranged to have my 2005 Super V8 with 180,000k miles serviced by my local indie who I have relied on for most of the time I have owned this car. He replaced the sensor and when he took it for a test drive the transmission gave up the ghost, transmission fault, stuck in 3rd gear in limp mode. I didn't ask him for a list of the fault codes, he has been a very reliable and trustworthy resource and he seems confident the transmission has catastrophically failed. While I didn't question him I'm not opposed to asking for this forum's opinion ha, I love this car and while it doesn't seem reasonable to invest in a new transmission that would cost more than the car is worth on the open market I'm still holding out some hope this can be salvaged or at least verified the car is beyond hope.

I suppose my hope rests in the possibility these faults may be electrical in nature, I only ponder this possibility because I recently had a puddle in the passenger seat area after a severe rainstorm, I did look in the cabin filter compartment and it was not wet so I'm not sure this water originated there, maybe I'm grasping at straws here, have I mentioned I love this car ha. As for other electrical gremlins that recently appeared, my clock started losing maybe 10 minutes a day and the passenger side mirror has been in might mode constantly for a few weeks, or at least that's how it appears to me, I'm not even sure these things have a night mode, have I mentioned I'm not handy?

If this car and transmission isn't salvageable I'd like to see if any forum members local (Massachusetts) would like to take this as a parts car, it has fairly new tires and pretty much ever coolant hose in the car has been replaced in the past two years, I also have some stuff that never got installed, Bluetooth module and some side marker lights, I'd rather donate it to some member who can benefit than just have it towed away to be crushed.

In closing I'd like to thank all the members of this forum for the help I have indirectly received, it really has been a wonderful experience.

Regards,
Mark

it happening right after changing the rear sensor is very suspicious. a bad driver side abs sensor/speed mismatch will 100% cause a p0730 and immediately throw you into gearbox fault, i need to check if the pass side is also involved.

Default ABS Controller may be issue

The ABS controller gets baked and finally fails. Having a supercharger usually means even higher temps.
My 335iI and A8 both had the ABS controller fail. Gave wheel sensor failures. Used Module Master to rebuild both. They say they address some of the common failure components while fixing. Both have worked fine afterwards.
I replaced a few wheel speed sensors and checked wiring before sending the BMW box off to fixed. Sent the Audi off quicker once issue has been identified. .

Mark,

First - good to hear you have enjoyed following the forum for many years and have found useful information to help with your ownership.

Second - I wouldn't immediately conclude the transmission is terminal. At least ask for the codes to get a clearer indication of other possibilities because the events do seem a remarkable coincidence. If it does come to the worst, although a new transmission makes no economic sense, a rebuild could be worth considering.

If it were me I'd want to see the fault codes thrown up and, hopefully, for you to post them on this forum. OK, 180k miles is a lot but the basic gearbox is well capable of going a lot further, but the mechatronic assembly inside the box could have suffered one or two common failures known on these boxes. One is the seal between mech assembly and the main gearbox, thus allowing fluid under pressure to go down the wrong hole, maybe more than one, the other is failure of one or more of the electric valves mounted on the mechatronic assembly.
Another thing that causes trouble is dirt and contamination of the electric plug socket connecting the box to the rest of the electronic modules on the car. Early seals were not very good and a new one was developed. It is a simple job to clean and then replace the seal, I had it done on my 2003 car.

Maybe time to find a ZF transmission specialist. This will be a shop that deals in European cars like BMW who also use it.

Do not give up on it yet.

If it is an electrical fault a specialist can identify the fault precisely using his

custom tester.

Funny how it failed on the test drive?

The g'box depends on wheel sensors and the ABS system for a speed signal.

If the vehicle is undrivable you might persuade a specialist to diagnose it on your drive.

One doesn't want to see the Jag on the back of a tow truck.

A very tardy update to my transmission issue, I had the car towed back my driveway but then was out of town for the next month so I didn't have an opportunity to give it any attention until this week.

My mechanic did not save the codes so I had to rely on my very basic OBD II scanner which reported the following codes:
P1000 - pending codes
C1165 - (twice which was odd) - Passenger rear ABS sensor
P0701 - Transmission control system range/performance
P0735 - Gear 5 incorrect ratio.

Currently the car does move but slams into whatever gear with a hard thunk. Now for the really strange part, it occurred to me that just before getting the car into the shop I had replaced the MAF sensor to address a check engine code, I had a new one laying around from years earlier that I had taken out after one day because it made the car run rough, when I put it in this time it ran fine but didn't seem to fix the code. On a whim I cleaned the old one with sensor spray and put it back in, and for one drive the transmission was fine, I drove it around the block a few times (maybe about a mile in total) and it shifted smoothly for the entire drive. That's where the good news ends, the next day it was back to crashing into gear and basically unusable.

This curious experience has me hoping the transmission still has some life left in it but I'm not really sure on how to proceed, I suspect a fluid and filter change should be my first step in conjunction with chasing down the ABS problem ( my mechanic had replaced the sensor but said it did not resolve the ABS problem so he put the old one back in). I'm hoping somebody could suggest the best plan of attack or maybe the codes and my experience really do point to a mechanical failure which at this point I don't think I would fix, with 180,000 miles on the clock it probably isn't worth a significant investment.

Oh, I did jack up the rear and give the wheel a good shake as I had seen some posts where a bad wheel bearing created a similar mess of issues, the wheel had a tiny bit of play but not sure it would be considered notable.

Regards,
Mark

put another sensor in

bad rear sensor = gearbox fault

Hi Mark
I am really sorry to hear about your issues. Being that it is a Super v8, I think it is worth saving. One of the first things I would do, even if it is unrelated, is to clear out all of your sunroof drains. The fronts are super easy. All it would require is locating the holes in the front inside of the sunroof track and run a small stiff wire, or better yet, a weed-wacker line with the end melted into a small ball. An obstruction here is the likely culprit for your pooling of water. I prefer to remove the a-pillar panels, front sun visors and grab handles on each side of the vehicle to gain direct access to the hoses that go from the sun roof frame down to the drain, but I understand that kind of job might not be in your comfort zone. The rears can be a slightly bigger job, but it is doable nonetheless. There are several threads here that can give you some guidance. I think it would be a good idea to resolve this issue, while you also resolve your transmission/ABS problems, especially if the vehicle is parked outside and may sit for extended periods. Best of luck!

I had the same issue where after a transmission service the 3rd gear was stuck! That was because not enough fluid was in the transmission (my fault entirely) - I did not follow instructions to the tee. Once I followed the proper instructions in filling the tranny with the correct amount of ZF fluid, the problem was gone. That was like 7 years ago. Never had an issue since. Don't give up. If you do not wrench yourself unfortunately you are at the mercy of others who may know even less about the car than you do.

How do I fix the C1165 code? Check the "Possible Causes" listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector's pins.

Mark,

I'm betting the problem is just what Xalty said (twice, above)

- Do a quick search, and you'll find that I had pretty much identical transmission problem, which turned out to be LH rear wheel sensor. I'm further betting you still have bad/incorrect sensor, or (v likely in MA) corroded connector, etc. Absolutely run this completely down before doing anything else (PM if you'd like me to walk you through this by phone)

- Ditto Jac above, clean sunroof drains (fronts are easy)

You have a few easy fixes identified. These modules all interact. Hard to identify exact main cause.
Those sunroof drains are a real maintenance item. Can flood the ECU and cause other issues. I have another car that has much more roof drain issues the the x350. Tried weedwacker line, steel cable, and air. Started to search and found some thin nylon tubing. Connected to the Miteyvac and used this to suck the debris out. Just redid. Got just a little dirt. Takes 10 minutes to do both fronts. .

Default Sunroof drain service unit.

Thin white coil is the nylon tubing.

Hopefully my last update on what appears to be a REOLVED issue!

Over the weekend I installed a new ABS sensor and all the faults disappeared, the ABS fault cleared before I reached the end of the driveway, the transmission fault cleared after a one mile drive and a restart of the car. I haven't had the car on the highway yet but I drove it about 20 miles on a few trips around town yesterday and the transmission shifted smoothly with no errors. I'm a little concerned about the P0735 being an indication of a future issue but I'll cross that bridge if and when I get to it.

Thinking about the series of events I'm guessing the new ABS sensor installed at the shop must have been faulty in some fashion and that in conjunction with the obviously faulty MAF sensor I had installed the day previous sent the TCM into confusion so it threw some codes and went into full pressure mode. Replacing the MAF with the original (after cleaning) gave me some hope since after that the transmission had moments of being better, once the bad ABS sensor was replaced all the information being sent to the TCM probably made sense again and viola, working transmission.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement, now I get to decide if I want to spend money on a coil over conversion because one of the front (rebuilt) shocks is leaking, I'm thinking I'll use one of the wife's strategies and exclaim how much money I'm saving since I didn't have to buy a new transmission or a new car .

Thanks again for all the help.

-Mark

Glad to hear the girl will be saved...yeah, go ahead and spend the money to fix the suspension since you saved a bunch from purchasing another car. Used car prices are ridiculous. .

Yes good job but please stop swapping parts (MAF??) if your codes don't point to that failure. These cars are too complex to just start changing parts. You never had a MAF issue and the code clearly pointed to ABS sensors.
