Default Help! Power Steering Hose Failed - where should this connect?

I heard a bang from underneath the car whilst I was on the highway and then when I came to turn off at the exit discovered that I had lost power steering - bit of a moment as the exit tightens pretty rapidly.

Any way I was only a mile from home so put the car p on ramps when i got back and found that a hose clip has failed and the hose has come off, with the loss of all the PS fluid.

The main problem is that I cannot see where the hose should be attached. I have the workshop manual but the diagram is not great.

The hose comes out of the left hand of the power steering rack on a 'T' shaped metal pipe and then is the one connected at 90 degrees. It looks like it should run parallel to the steering rack but the diagram doesn't show any hoses running that way.

The hose has a part number label with 2W933L602CA written on it, but even a web search doesn't help identify it. There are a couple of photos attached, which I hope will help.

Do you think that just replacing the hose and filling/bleeding the system will sort it or is it likely that there will have been damage to the pump/rack from the loss of fluid?

Really hoping someone can help as I don't want to drive it until it is fixed.

Not sure I will be much help as I am very new to Jaguars, however, I am thinking that there will be recirculating pipe run going to and from the PS pump and the rack. If you can get a view of the underside of the Pump. I am thinking there should be a flow and a return pipe at the very least.....so if you follow the pipes FROM the pump you should come to the other end of the pipe or fitting where the break is... Forgive me if this seems obvious or you have already done this...Allan

The Parts Catalogue diagram may help members with the same model to identify the hose for you:

The general layout diagram from JTIS doesn't show a 'T' connection but the connection of item 5 to the rack isn't clear in this drawing.

I agree with the above to a point.

The snaps show NO oil mess, or signs of washing it clean, so where has it gone?.

Following teh plumbing from the pump is teh only way, agreed.

If it was a BANG heard inside an X308, then that would have been a "hi-pressure" hose. That are a crimped style hose, and specialist intervention will be needed, OR, a new Genuine Jaguar hose to replace what has failed.

From what I read, you drove it with no fluid, OK, we do what we need to do, but that has probably screwed the pump. They really do not like to run dry.

Once the hose is replaced/repaired, refilling with new fluid and running it will soon tell the story.

The fluid came out of the hose and sprayed rearwards along the underside of the transmission, that's why it looks clean. The end of the hose has been abraded where it was rubbing on the ground.

I didn't realise that I had lost power steering until I came to the off ramp and that is only a mile from home - I thought that the bang could have been the PS belt snapping.

I have those same diagrams but they do not show the hose that I have the problem with. The rack has one hose on the same T piece which turns and heads forwards and then there is another metal pipe just visible in the photos which has another hose attached. those hoses seem to be the supply and return.

The 'problem' hose has a small plastic clip attached to the metal pipes on the rack which seem to suggest (from the angle of the clip) that the hose should initially run parallel with the rack.

If any one with a X350 could spare a minute or two to take a photo of the rack connections it would really be appreciated - I will have another look this morning now that the engine & exhausts are cold,

I really don't want to have to take it to a shop, especially as it would need a tow to get there.

Anyone able to stick a camera under their X350 and able to post a photo of the hose connections at the steering rack please?

Just spent another 2 hours under the car trying to find where this hose should go. Really don't want to call out a mechanic if it just a case of refitting a hose!

It looks like the other hose on the T piece goes back to the cooler or reservoir. The other connection on the rack comes from the pump.

I'm presuming that the pump supplies fluid to the rack and then the fluid goes to the cooler, then to the reservoir, then back to the pump?

Evidently it's just for fluid expansion. Need to figure out if it blew out for a particular reason, because nothing suggests there was a failure with the pump or the rack. Perhaps it's just age, 174000 miles on it.

So I verified that the pump is fine, when I had my transmission serviced recently, the shop neglected to properly secure the expansion line. Thankfully no serious damage was done. I jammed a brass plug in there, and secured it with a hose clamp, I then secured the hose to the chassis where it wouldn't rub on anything.

I was driving my 03 S-Type today and my power steering suddenly went out. I started researching and of course I end up here! This same thing happened to me. A brass plug and a hose clamp worked great!

I was trying to get clarity on the brass plug and clamp. I have my car jacked up now and have the same issue. I can't track where the end of this hose goes because it was hanging.

Hi guys,

Hoping you can help. I have 1998 XJR which has a power steering fluid leak I checked under the engine yesterday and noticed the pipe that goes to the cooler has corroded this is the bottom one shown as number 5 in the diagram above. Would anyone know the part number or what this pipe is referred to? Thanks

Hi Cpl. Clevg,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

The last time we heard from Chenzo was six years ago, and he never reported back with the resolution. His car was a 2004 XJ8. Is your car similar or a different model? Is your problem a failure of the same hose as on Chenzo's car?

Cheers,

Don

The hose isn't used when that rack is fitted to the x350.

Just find a suitable blanking plug, clamp it in and then tie the hose back along the rack.

I refilled the PS fluid and it was all good, no damage done.

Think the bang must have been the old blank coming out

Question

Was it left this way to drain the fluid from the system, say to change it?

Thank goodness I found this thread.
I was at a complete loss on where this hose was supposed to go to.
I put a blank cap in it, clamped it down. Fill up the reservoir a few times.
No leaks and she drives like a dream again.

Thank you so much!
