Help with wiring harness - need pic of main harness, rats ate mine
Hi
Hoping someone can help.
My 2004 XJ8 was attacked by packrats that ate/sheared off the wiring harness that comes from the firewall into the engine compartment underneath the brake vacuum booster. I've tried reconnecting wires by color, but have 6 wires left over.
It is an area where 3 wiring clusters come together, and I wonder if there was a loom, connector, or multiple wire splices there.
Since they ate everything, I have nothing to go on. Does anyone have a picture of the wiring harnesses coming together there?
Is anyone kind enough to pull out the foam insert under the brake booster and snap a pic for me, so I can see what I am missing?
Hi
I managed to re-connect about 15-18 wires by color code, but have 4 wires that come into the area under the brake booster from the rear of the engine that don't seem to have 'anywhere to go' - no wire to pair up with. I don't think there was ever a loom here, but if there were splices, then that would explain why I have 4 leftovers.
Can I ask anyone with a 04 xj8 to take a pic of the wires under the brake booster? (You would need to pull out the large grey foam piece that is probably there).
Thanks!. I have replaced the entire front end, replaced the air suspension, and the car was finally ready for daily driving, but I have a dashboard full of error codes. Will even start with alcohol spray and run well, but the fuel pump does not come on. I'm so frustrated I might just hotwire the fuel pump to the ignition wire!!
Can you take a pic of the area around the wiring loom that is cut? Like a pic that you would want to see from me so you can compare back to back? I'm working on that area, with my engine out as well, on my early 2005 xj super v8. My car falls under the 2004 MY electrical guide VIN range. My VIN is G33... before the 2005 year

Thanks for replying - I will take a pic in the morning.
I'm worried it may only confuse you - I had to reconnect a lot of wires where the rats had eaten 6 inches or so, so I had very little to work with. I had to run the wires through another hole just so they would reach each other, and I also had to run some wires along a different path to have them line up. In 5 instances the wires didn't reach so I had to patch them with plain blue and yellow wire from a hardware store.
If your diagram covers my area, I'll be thrilled. I saw one black rubber splice cover in place, and found another one on the ground, so I figured the splices would explain my extra wires. I'll see if the wires I have line up with the splice intersections in that diagram.
PS
I went on ebay and looked up wiring harnesses. If you go online, there is the obvious rubber boot where the wiring harness comes from out of the driver's footwell and passes through the firewall. Do you want pictures of the intact wiring under the dash?
But I will ask where you found that diagram you sent me. That looks like the right one, but I can't find it in the "2004 MY XJ Electrical Guide.pdf" I am trying to use. If I had the whole diagram, I could see where the wires come from. I have a 3-way junction from where the wires come through the firewall, and merge with the bundle that runs along the wheel well to the front of the car, and the bundle that comes from the rear of the engine. The bundle that comes in sideways from the rear of the engine has the 'extra' unallocated 4 wires. From memory, 2 are OY, and the other 2 might be BG. I might be forced to simply try and splice them in one of 3 ways until my error codes for evap system and pedal position sensor go away.
I think you got it now, but to be clear, I've got my harnesses super exposed for great pictures. I'm offering to recreate a picture you take of the section you need with my good harness pic. Or I can throw a bunch of pictures of the brake booster area harness at you haha. I've got no plastic in the way now.
Edit: you're online writing at the same time as me lol. What i sent was the cover for the 2005 model year electrical guide to show the VIN range of that year is after mine. My car should match yours despite being called a 2005, the only exception is that mine is supercharged.

First, for perspective, I circled in yellow the 3-way intersection that was eaten by rats.
I took some pics at night, with a flashlight. I hope they are visible. Since the wires were eaten, and then I had to re-route the wires, I don't even know how it would look under 'regular' circumstance.
Have to say I can't tell you how much I appreciate your offer to help. Even that diagram may save me.
I took a lot of pics, but here are two - one from far away, and one that shows the area under the brake drum where I am hoping the harness may be visible. If I am wrong, then the only other way to see is from inside the wheel well, which would be a LOT of work to expose, and I wouldn't ask that of anyone. A far away shot to show the area under the grey foam. Sorry about a night shot taken with a flashlight. Just to help orient you. This second shot is the best I could do at night - a semi-close up of area under the booster. If I put my camera any closer to where I actually need a pic, I don't think you could tell where the pic was taken. To the left of the bright blue electrical tape, which in this shot goes into shadow, is the area I am interested in. In the daylight, a closeup of the wires under the booster, with the camera even closer in than in this shot, would be a great help. Again, my wires were re-routed and in a normal car would be a tight bundle and would have come up from the bottom of the compartment.
PS I used the bright blue electrical tape to hold the 4 'extra' wires without a mate together. They come from the rear of the engine, and I suspect they splice into matching color wires right where the blue tape is. I guess I am hoping you have 3-4 black rubber tubes covering up 3-4 splices in this area. That will tell me where to start splicing.
Here's what I have, it's all nice wire looms I'm afraid, with not many splices to speak of. I zoomed in like you did. I'll try to get the wiring diagram I think this shows up on if you want.
I went left to right looking at the booster. If you want different angles at any of these points, let me know.
Actually, that is vey helpful. Knowing that there is NOT another intersection of cable runs lets me know that my extra wires do all have to join up at the intersection.
I really appreciate it. Would buy you a beer but I'm in Arizona!!
