Hopefully easy fix/electrical
Recently, while looking for an SUV, the wife spotteda '03 XJ8 w/38K mileswhich she fell in love withand of course I had to get in order tokeep peace within the house. After replacing the serpentine tensionerand belt because of the intermetent squeeking ( easy 30 min. job but $130 ) I noticed that the dome light didn't come on when thedrivers door, left and right rear doors were opened nor did the door guardlights activate. The only door that activated the dome light and had the guard light work was the passenger front. Of course I checked all the fuses and the bulbs but everything was OK.Does anyone know what activates thedome and door guard lights when the doors are opened ? Are they in series beginning with the passenger front and a bad wire be my problem ? Are there modules for each door ? I haven't a clue ...

Could you confirm if this is an X350 model, or the previous one?
If the X350 then the passenger puddle lamp is lit by the front electronic module, whereas the driver side is lit by the driver door module and the rear doors are lit by the rear electronic module. Each respective module is also responsible for each door ajar switch, which is the input signal for turning on the lamps.
Because all of the lamps come on when the passenger door is opened, it sounds like the other two modules are not receiving their respective door ajar signals. There is no common wiring between them.
When do the footwell lamps come on, when any door is opened or only with the passenger door?
If the pre-X350 model then each door has its own control module which handles both the door ajar switch and the pudle lamp. There is no footwel lighting as far as I can tell from the schematics. Again because all of the lamps come on when the passenger door is opened, it sounds like the other modules are not receiving their respective door ajar signals. There is also no common wiring between them.
My first check would to be try and find out if there is a common problem with the door ajar switches failing, coroding, or otherwise not working either for electrical or mechanical reasons. I can't help you there buthopefully someone will come along shortly who will know, otherwise phone your local dealer to ask. I think it is unlikely that two (or three) separate modules would fail with the same symptom.

Thanks XDave,
...not sure if X350 (?). It does have the 4.0 non-super engine w/5 speed auto, premium sound, etc. Checked all auto stores for repair manuals and/or wiring schematic but to no avail. Called the local Jag dealer who had no knowledge concerning my dilemma but said the XJ8 jag manuals are not available to public, they were "dealer only" ...that's nice, kinda priority only, keeps you coming back ($$$) even on small repairs. I suppose it's time to check out the extended warranty after only 130 miles. Sad for such a CS problem ...

If you 'PM' me your e-mail address, I will send you PDF copies of the entire electrical quides (which include all the schematics) for both pre and post 2004 models. (That covers the older model and the X350.) Those are the schematics I used to write my earlier reply, and indeed I use them constantly when playing with my own cars. They come to 12MB together so make sure your e-mail mailbox will allow them if you are using a free or hosted service.
I believe (this is a guess based on observation and may be incorrect) that if the end of your VIN number starts with an G or Hit is an X350, if it is F it will be the model before.
