The fob battery has no effect on the transponder function.

if the fancy takes you, you can remove the remote control fob from the key end. You can still unlock the door, boot, steering and start the car with no fob.

That's exceptionally good news then. The likelihood of failure on a passive device is much lower than a powered circuit as I though our key system was. Is there a crystal inside the key end that starts to oscillate when the car sends out the magnetic field? I didn't see any electronics in the key end of the fob but I didn't disassemble that end.

The transponder is sealed in a pocket in the plastic key holder, you can see the end of it here.

The lock/unlock buttons on my key fob take several presses to work. I opened up the key fob per documented instructions and thoroughly cleaned the inside, put it back together. Still the same problem. Anyone know what else is going on?

Wolfy, the lock and unlock buttons are used the most on the key fob. When you push the button there should be a crisp click being achieved from the micro switch. If not a crisp click the micro switch may be becoming worn out. Compare the feel to say the headlight or truck button. Do they always work on first click and have a nice click feel? Micro switches are sold on eBay that would require a steady hand and good soldering skills. Otherwise buy a used key fob button portion and reprogram to your car.

Yes the other 2 buttons work upon the first click. I even changed the battery. It's not super annoying but I'm learning to live with it...along with the other British quirks and minor annoyances (sort of like my married home life).

there are people who take your fob and replace the microswitches. They advertise on ebay and possibly in some of the car enthusiast magazines. You can also get a new rubber insert if the print is wearing off. Or you could just get a new/used fob and program it to your car. It can be removed from the key and transponder part quite easily. It's useful to have a spare.

Good info. The costs to get the key cut seem a bit low. I got a replacement key cut a year ago, at about $75, which was still better than a dealer key at $350.

Just needing a tibby key replacement....getting the job done at the lowest cost if you purchased a used key fob on Ebay and just need a new tibby key shaft to fit your car. Here is the latest info. as of today.

Here is a seller on ebay selling the tibby key blank (metal/chrome style) for only $8.95 with free shipping out of California.

The jaguar dealer, for instance, in Lake Bluff, Illinoise only charges $5.00 to cut the blank you provide and a lock smith in Racine, Wisconsin will also cut the blank you have for only $5.00. (of course the Jaguar Dealer will also look at you and say, you will need to have the keyfob programmed to your car in order for it to work! for me I already programmed it myself so just rementioned to him that I just need a cut....always fun to see them look at you like...how did you do that , and with that they cut it within minutes).

If you prefer, you can buy the tibby key blank and have the same seller cut your key all for $15.00 USD plus $6.00 shipping as it is from the UK. He does excellent work and uses the origional brass key blank versus some others that use the metal/chrome blank. Both blanks work great, it is just a matter of preferance.

Here is another seller on Ebay out of the UK that other forum members say does a great job on providing the tibby key blank and cuting it for you at about the same cost as the other UK seller above. This seller uses the metal/chrome type key blank.

I myself have 5 key fobs all working great and programmed to my car all at a rather low cost comparing to what many other forum members have paid.

I lost one of the original fobs and was able to program the transponders of new fobs/keys with one original fob and valet key.

Here are the steps my friends:

1. Insert original fob key for two seconds noting the security light solid to the second position before running the starter then Pull the key out quickly

2. Repeat the same with the valet key or second original fob key

3. Repeat the same as #1 with every New key fob or key

Congratulations! You just duplicated your transponder New key fob and/or new key

Having read through all the threads on this subject. I have deduced that in my case I probably need to seek some professional help.

I have tried numerous attempts to re-programme my fobs with no success.

I get the chirp after the fourth headlamp flash but no reaction to pressing the fob buttons and after 30 seconds the system times out with a chirp followed by two pips signifying failure and unless anyone knows better ? I believe the system requires resetting to register my two fobs.

So with a growing sense of trepidation I will open my wallet and approach the "Robber Barons"
