The left rear window on my 05 XJ8 will go down/up maybe 3 inches then stop. I have to keep pressing the switch several times before it will even move, but when it does, it's just a few inches! I am guessing the motor and/or regulator? Any ideas? PS Both switches (driver's & rear door) do the same! It will not move at all in the auto, but will in the "manual" position.

Before hunting for a hardware problem, try retraining them. Sounds like they have lost their stored upper and lower limits.

If that doesn't sort it, then you might have a guide track that is creating excessive friction and the window motor is tripping an over current protection.

 

It does not sound like a retraining problem to me, because in that case the windows would go up and down manually all the way without stopping. As they only move about 3 inches and then stop, it looks like another problem to me,either electronic, or mechanical.

With both switches showing the same response, I would try to have a look at the mechanism.
