Default Limp mode

I was driving down the highway all was fine. When I stopped at a light the car went into limp mode and sounded like it was banging. No temp change, no smoke nothing. I pulled it into a parking lot and sat for a bit. I opened it up and started it. It sounds like it's at the top maybe in the supercharger. It has a loud metalic sound almost a clunking. I just changed the oil and oil filter a couple days before. Filter may have been shorter than the last one. It was a designated oil filter for that car at autozone. Nothing else changed. I had to have it towed to my house.

Please describe the car more fully, like - year, miles, etc.

There will be stored fault codes and you need to get them read.

Suitable OBD tools cost from about $5 up but some places like AutoZone will read them free.

I can't drive it there. It doesn't sound good now, and it's in limp mode even though it doesn't say that on the dash. I'll go buy one, what do you suggest I buy?
thank you for your help

You're right not to drive it. The sound your describing cannot be good but also not diagnosed without the code reader. Assuming you have your car home and no urgency to move it, or you've towed it home, I suggest ordering a Bluetooth Dongle from Amazon or eBay and downloading the Torque Pro App from google play. The tool will only read engine codes but it sounds like that's all you need right now. Total cost will be around $25.

If you want a more robust diagnostic hand held tool, try icarsoft or Foxwell.

It may be that your auto parts store will rent you theirs (really it's free, just a temporary deposit), but you have to get to the store.

All codes are read with the ignition on but the car is NOT running, so that should give us a running start at the problem.

Are you sure you have posted in the right forum ? Reason I ask is because a 2002 car is before the X350 came on sale in 2003. I suspect your car is an X308 model series, the last of the steel-bodied XJ saloons. If so, probably a different gearbox.

Default supercharger

Can a blown supercharger put a car into limp mode? I have no new lights or messages on my dash. No temperature issues. No smoke issues. Noise sounded like rocks and now bigger and car is in limp mode. I had it towed home. I hurt my back or I'd be digging into the supercharger to take a look and see if it's torn up. But, limp mode?
