I have 2004 XJ8-it has recently, at 18000 miles, developed a "ticking noise" at relatively low RPM/speed. Any ideas at what it may be?

 

it's pinging. Car needs to have it's ECM reprogrammed... to fix this issue there is a bulletin on it.

 

Thanks for the reply. What is ECM? The noise is coming from engine area while running at low speed as said-just started gradually to occur-but engine seems to run fine otherwise.

 

Electronic Control Module .. it is the brains of the engine.. it needs the software to be updated.

Also 2004 XJ8 also had a problem with the purge valves ticking. Very faint, and very annoing.

 

did you just buy it? nice low miles you have!

 

Thanks for the interest. I went back to dealer under warranty-purge valve it is. The car is low miles-or was-I've put several thousand on it since purchase. I always take it unless there is snow on the roads. Great car to drive-good power when needed-keep it in sport mode.
