Default Missing an oil pan screw

While changing the oil filter last weekend I noticed one of the screws was missing from the pan. Looked, it was not broken off, must have fallen out.
Is this a dealer only part? Luckily, no leak.

Hi Panelhead,

I don't remember the year, model or engine of your car (always a good idea to add that info to your signature line to save time in receiving accurate replies), but you can look up the part number in the Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) that you can download free from this forum. For example, for a 2004 4.2L XJ8, the part number for the oil sump pan screws is JZH100059 and they are available from jaguarmerriamparts.com for $1.31 each:

Jaguar Parts Center - Call (800) 510-1401 for Genuine Jaguar Parts and Accessories

However, if you'll take one of your remaining screws and washers to a good hardware store, you can probably find one in a matching thread and length (metric, I assume). Industrial suppliers like McMaster-Carr (mcmaster.com) and MSC Direct (mscdirect.com) are also good sources for fasteners.

And thinking about the fact that you've lost a screw, my assumption is that the oil pan gasket has hardened and compressed over time, allowing the lost screw, and possibly others, to loosen. It might be worth giving each of the remaining screws a gentle snugging to be sure they don't also fall out, and the next time you change the oil you might consider replacing the oil pan gasket and properly re-torquing all the screws.

Cheers,

Don
