Default Nav Screen Error 50 51

My 2006 XJ8 shows a blank (black) touchscreen on the nav system when starting up. Also none of the buttons work, such as nav, climate, etc for 15 to 20 minutes; then slowly the screen illuminates and the buttons work.. Dealer says replace screeen for $4K. Any suggestions??
Thanks

I priced used touchscreen units on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market, and found them to be between $150 and $1000, certainly would swap with a used one as a test before I would go head first on a new unit...heck, I'd probably just keep the used one if the screen was in great condition. It has to be power related to the entire unit..did you at least take it out and check all plugs into/out of the back for corrosion and/or tight connection?

Are you sure it is the touch screen that is broken. Error codes 50 and 51 are generally to do with the Nav unit. You see the same codes when you flash the nav unit because it reboots as part of the process and the screen will remain blank if it doesn't get a response from the nav unit at startup.

50 = Disconnection between Nav ECU and display. There is no response from Nav during initialization.

51 = Transmission failure to the Nav ECU 10/ Communication. Unable to transmit when attempting a retransmission (Nav ECU).

Have you tried running the touch screen diagnostics. You normally get in via a hidden keypad when the system operates normally but it appears you can still display it when the nav unit isn't responding (see attached).

In the post #89 there is the file you need to copy to the disc.

OK, I did as you suggested and the screen came to life, but only for the diagnostics. After truning off and on the car the screen is strill blank with the knobs not working.
So it seems that the screeen works but the sending module is not working? Is that the diagnosis? What do I do next? Thnaks for your help!

Ok the dignostics worked... So now I downloaded the Loading.KWI file at 2.5 and tried as you directed to reload the sysytem... No luck the screen is still blank. Does this mean the cpu in the trunk is bad, but the nav screen is good?

Yes it'd look like the DVD drive has had it.

BUT i would try again, several times, it might also be how you copy the file to the disc.

The fact that it used to slowly come back to life points to an electrical/hardware issue rather than software.

It could be a faulty nav unit, wiring loom or even still the screen but if you are handy with an electrical meter have a look through the attached.

Thank you very much. I dropped my car off at the dearler tonight to have them look at it tomorrow. I think it may be the control cpu in the trunk, but we'll see what they say. I think I can buy a cpu out of a reck for less than $500... I've seen them on e-Bay and looked up used auto parts. I still would liek to find a repair shop in Rhode Isalnd to take my car to..
