Need a DSC/ABS fault "gut reaction" from a veteran.
I have researched this for the last few hours, but still have some quick questions. I started out on the BMW forums like this a few years ago; with lots of questions. They will taper off....
I received my new lug nuts in the mail today for the 2004 XJ8, so I removed the front wheels and calipers, added a little anti squeak stuff to the back of the pads, and put the wheels back on with the new lug nuts. (three of the old lug nuts were totally destroyed getting them off!) When I started the car up for a test drive, the drivers side front brakes are grinding and squeaking a bit; even more than before, and the ABS fault/DSC unavailable warnings are flashing. P1111 on my little scanner, so no engine light problems, and other than the noise from the driver front brakes, the car drives fine.
What I've tried:
1) Tested battery, it was at 70% charge. Charged to 100% and re-installed. ABS/DSC still there.
2) Removed both ABS speed sensors; thoroughly cleaned the connections at both ends and re-installed. Warnings still there.
Side note: The transmission was discovered to be leaking a few days ago. There is usually about a 6 inch diameter stain on the garage floor. I ordered the pan/gasket/fluid/sleeve etc. kit and it's scheduled to arrive on Saturday. I don't know if that's relevant, but there it is...
Any veteran thoughts?

Hi harvest14,
A battery with 70% charge is definitely not going to make a Jaguar happy, so that may be the underlying source of your problem. You might try doing the "hard reset" procedure to see if the ABS/DSC warning disappears: Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and touch its terminal to the positive terminal for about one minute, then reconnect.
If the ABS/DSC warning reappears, you'll probably want to have your Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) scanned by a system capable of reading the proprietary Jaguar codes. Standard OBDII scanners can only read most of the P (Powertrain) codes, but the ABS/DSC codes will be C (Chassis) or U (Undefined, mostly Network-related) codes, which can only be read with a Jaguar dealer-level system like SDD, a high-end third-party system like AutoEnginuity with the Jaguar extension, or possibly a dedicated scanner like the iCarsoft i930 Jaguar edition. Knowing what codes are stored will save you a lot of time and potentially wasted money. The Workshop Manual and the DTC Summaries manual give detailed definitions of all the codes that are very helpful for troubleshooting.
If this problem started only after you had changed the brake pads, it would be worth double-checking your work, especially on the front driver's side where you're hearing the grinding noise. Could the harness for the wheel speed sensor have been strained, causing a loose connection or short?
Hopefully other members will have additional ideas.
Cheers,
Don

Reset and scan tool...
Is there a scan tool that I can use on both my 2001 and 2004 xj8 that is $200 or less? I noticed the icarsoft reference above and would like to have something like that in my toolbox to help in these situations.
Also, if I do a hard reset on the car, is there is re-initialization procedure or to I simply hook the battery back up and reset my station presets etc. like in a normal car?
Thanks

I don't know if any members have tested the i930 with an X350, so you'd probably need to check with iCarsoft. I have an i930 BMW version and it works fine on our '04 325i. For our X350 I'm using SDD on a laptop. Search the forum for the various options for purchasing and operating this dealer-level system at home. I am not certain whether SDD will work on your 2001.
