Did it just stop working one day when you turned the engine on? If so it may just be that the laser needs adjusting.

Now, if you were messing about with trying to upgrade your maps from an ebay copy or similar then possibly you will need the original .KWI file to reinstall the OS. But typically having a faulty .kwi file will stop all functions working on your NAv screen and you don't mention that.

So I reckon its a faulty sat nav/dvd player or just the laser needs adjusting. However I have been known to be wrong (on many occasions!).

Mine works somedays and doesn't work others. Its all a bit crazy with these older systems.

I had the same problem. Even bought another DVD player on Ebay. Then I cleaned mine with a DVD cleaning disc. It works just fine now.

Hopefully a cleaning cd will help.
If not most likely it's the laser head. I have the same issue and adjusted it to a little progress but it ultimately have out.
I have thought about replacing the laser head but for the trouble it's worth I must as well update like 31by151 did.

Yeah, you probably want to clean the Nav box. You could use a dust sprayer actually, to spray inside. Worked for me @least...

+1 - This worked for me and works for my mechanic as well. He addresses a lot of Nav units exactly like this.

Eject the disc and shoot compressed air into the unit via the DVD slot. Clean the disc and replace. You may have to repeat the first step a few times but it will more than likely address the issue.
Note: I've used a DVD laser pickup cleaner (a DVD with small bristle brushes) but I've had much better results with the compressed air.

X type DVD does not work in the XJ. Never the less since the DVD cleaner does not work it could either be the DVD player or the disc itself.

I actually have my Iphone sat in the crease between the cigarette tray and the j gate shifter and use that with the Waze app for all my Sat nav driving these days. It is far better than the inbuilt system which only has the 2002 DVD map and is so out of date its useless.

Do you really need it as it sounds like its dead. If you do then see about getting a replacement off ebay like this:

04 05 Jaguar XJ8 DVD Navigation Player LKQ | eBay

Just noticed your location in Scotland, maybe that ebay link is not worthwhile as its US based, but you get the idea.

I got mine for way less. It was guaranteed however I have not tested it.
I plan on keeping it as a spare.
