Default Oil Filters

So, I'm interested in your opinions on oil filters. I have been paying $18.95 (full retail) for each Jaguar brand oil filter at the local dealer's parts counter and feel taken each time.

The local parts store had a special - 5 quarts of Castrol and either a Fram or Purolator oil filter for $14.99. I bought 20 quarts and ended up with 2 Fram and 2 Purolator filters, but I am a little leery of using them. Any thoughts?

Tony

I know FRAM Filters suck.. with that said, I used to use Purlator Pure One filters on all my vehicles, but have since switched to using factory filters on everything I own. No particular reason just figured it was worth the peace of mind. I just ordered 2 Jag Filters from JagGenius on this forum and saved some coin..

I've used both K&N and Purolater PureOne Filters for years with good results.

Remember that usually the OEM is just an overpriced, relabeled version of a mainstream filter ... very possibly one inferior in quality to some of the higher-end alternatives out there.

I third that too - one time a fram have a pin hole leak in it - totally freaked me out.

I use k&n in my car and purolator in my truck. I like the k&n because it had a nut on the end of it just in case you need to put a wrench on it.

I use Mobil 1 filters on my other cars, but the parts house didn't even have a listing for my 2004 VDP.

Wix is is the best they had on the shelf, and from what i understand is a good filter....

When I bought my 04 XJ8, it had a Wix p/n 51228. I just changed oil this weekend. I use Amsoil, and bought the filter from the website with the oil. Amsoil sells Mann filters (p/n W 713/29). The interesting thing is, the Mann filter is a bit shorter than the Wix, but both cross-reference to be the right one for an 04 XJ8 N/A 4.2L. <shrug>. I'll change it in about 4-6 months and top off.

Baldwin oil filters are excellent. They use superior springs, filters, housing all for a very reasonable cost. I used them on my S2000 and heard of them from some Ferrari owners. Their main business is in commercial applications like tractors...

Wow, kinda surprised at the Fram bashing. I've been using them(air, oil, and fuel) for years on all my cars, trucks, and even my bikes. I've never had an issue. I agree though about the factory filters. Most if not all are made by an outside company, not any better or worse than what you can get from your local auto parts store.

NAPA filters are made by WIX. Their stock numbers even include the WIX number.
