Default Overcharged! Too Much Freon? XJ

My AC was cold but not cold enough so i tried to add air conditioner from auto zone, it was showing in the green range on the gauge but i added a little bit more and its now in the red. Today when i drove my car my AC is worst, its not cold, is there anyway i can takeout some of the freon!

The climate control systems are complex. If it were me, I'd take it to an aircon specialist to get the system checked out.

Your AC system has a Pressure Cut Off Switch:

Overcharged! Too Much Freon? XJ-x350-ac-pressure-cut-off-switch.jpg

The switch is located in the A/C compressor discharge line and communicates with the ECM. If high or low refrigerant pressures are experienced, the ECM will interrupt A/C compressor operation.

High pressure explains why you have no cooling.

Don't fool around, take it to a shop that specializes in A/C, you don't have t take it to a dealer.

+1 on all of the above

Too much gas in the system as well as too little can cause issues.

On mine for example, the range is from 530 - 550 plus or minus 20 which would be from 510 -570

I took it to my local jag shop, they took out all the freon and filled it up again. Now its working as it was before i tried to add more freon. Its still not cold enough for this Texas heat. any ideals on how i can make it colder

What temperature have you set on the console ? Eventually, the degrees figure changes to 'Lo'. The cooled temperature has to be above freezing to stop the evaporator from freezing up with ice.

Do you let it run with 'AUTO' selected ? That should give you the maximum cooling set up.

If not then make sure you have the RECIRC button pressed and the air set to come out of the upper outlets rather than the lower ones. I find directing the air onto my arms very effective.

How does the AC work when you have been on a long trip? The AC may not cool well on short trips. I find my AC in NH works quite well, at least in part by living in NH not Texas!

Yes, but not by messing with the refrigerant charge. Too much pain, too little gain.

You would need some re-engineering, and are limited by available space, the shape of that space, and the airflow to and from it.

The most basic trick is to change to a larger and/or more thermally efficient heat exchanger coil set for the condenser side of the circuit. Copper, for example, has roughly triple the conductivity of the more commonly used aluminium. That said, even a more conductive tube and fin array still has to get enough air over it to take advantage.

There just have to be at least a few specialists who do modifications of luxury vehicles for the Oil Potentates of the uber-hot Middle East and as well as the US South West, Mexico and South, parts of Asia.

The experts are out there, even if more familiar with Hummers and the like than Jaguars.

is there any chance of dirt and fluff clogging the cabin filter or the evaporator?

I had mine recharged today, they sucked out 600g of old refrigerant and put in 800g back to full, didn't seem to me to make much difference. It is hotter than usual here. the tech said he measured the cold at 6.6C which seems pretty cold, but the interior stayed above 17C while I did a couple of 5-mile journeys. It is rather hotter and sunnier than usual here at the moment but I don't think it has been above 32C outside.

The car maintains a comfortable internal temperature, but, if I let it, blows hard when I get in after it has been parked in the sun. I find opening the windows for a minute on the blipper cools it down fastest.

p.s.
it cost me £49 incl refrigerant and oil. ($75US). I wouldn't bother DIYing it.

6.6 is about right. Check the pollen filter. If that is clogged you will get a reduced air flow across the evaporator.

Well I guess I should be happy that I live in NH! I would suppose that someone could design either a larger condenser coil or perhaps increase the size of the cooling fan to allow better Freon cooling. That may not be the limiting factor but it would be in the right direction. I believe a larger cooling fan may be the easiest approach to investigate.

Here in NJ its been real hot, 98 to 104 with heat index hitting 120. I roll down all four windows and open the roof for the first two minutes when I start off and roll them up when I feel the duct blowing cold. I think the system works very well and I have a black interior. It makes me think Kchirume has a problem some where in his system and does not need to reinvent the wheel.
