Default p0171 troubleshoot what first exhaust smell

If I do smell exhaust from the upper driver side engine bay, where would you trouble shoot first? the joint between the manifold pipe down to the Cat Converter connection? Put a spacer there?
it's a P0171 bank 1 lean that stayed on and restricted performance goes away at higher speed. Thanks!

My 2004 XJR has been troublesome area with lean fuel trims. The MAP sensor is a critical part of the fuel trim . My car runs best and code free with a DENSO mb197400-3021 sensor. I have replaced numerous parts to fix the lean code, including hoses, o rings, EGR valve, Throttle body and done fuel injector cleaning.

What are the fuel trims (measured as usual, at idle & about 2500rpm)?
