Default question on the common steering wheel squeak

I've read lots of the threads on this topic, realize there's an additive that is to cure some of the steering squeak. I'm not sure if this is what I'm hearing or not.

When the radio is not on and the windows are closed, moving the steering wheel to turn corners results in a sounds like plastic against rubber. Loud enough that even passengers hear it ("your steering wheel needs some WD-40" was one comment).

Is this the nosie the additive is supposed to fix? Or is this a seal or bushing inside the column making this noise? Not always consistant, and I don't even hear it if the radio is on. I have changed my power steering fluid with fresh, but that made no difference. I feel like sometimes the noise does go away, maybe after long drivers and the fluid is heated well.

Thanks,
-Michael

Mine's the same, and has done it since I bought the car. The noise is exactly as you describe it. I don't seem to hear it so much now, but maybe my hearing ain't too good nowadays. I just put it down as a "feature" not a "bug".

I have the same issue, i purchased the additive and changed the fluid twice before putting it in with MOBIL 1 ATF and still have the squeak. I am thinking of putting some 3 in 1 oil behind the steering wheel to see if this resolves it. i will follow up with everyone and let you know what happens.

Okay, thank you! So probably not worth the additive or any other money spent. Now that I've been listening, it seems to be loudest when the interior is cold. Now that we're up in the 70s again, almost no noise.

Here is Jaguar's TSB regarding power steering squeek noise. The Jaguar additive is JA-C2S-48887 - P/S Additive Power Steering Additive and cost about $9.00 for the 50ml bottle.

Thats the additive i put to no avail unfortunately. i just ordered two bottles of it and hope that this time with twice the amount, it will rectify the issue.

I had the same issue. The PAS additive minimized the noise but was still there. I replaced a leaking power steering return hose last week and replaced all the fluid with Mobile 1 ATF. No more squeaks.

Now that it's warmed up outside I don't really hear my squeak anymore. But will keep the Mobile1 ATF in mind if it returns next autumn.

Just heard this noise this evening. Outside temp today was in the low 70s.
To me, it sounds like a "squishing" noise- almost like you can hear the PS fluid being pushed through the lines.

There is a TSB for the additive and you are only supposed to add the additive once.

If you can only add the additive once, how can i resolve the squeaking issue?
