Default Rear sun shade

I have a 2004 VDP. There is a button next to the sunroof buttons that is supposed to be for the "rear sunshade".. when i press it i can hear a click from behind the rear seat.. There is a plastic "bar" that runs along behind the rear seats on the deck, but it does nothing. There isn't much info in the owner book about it either..

Anybody know much about it?

I have a 2004 XJ8 with the rear electronic sun shade. Pressing the button next to the sunroof button should cause that plastic bar to rise up to the top of the window; it carries the shade material with it. It sounds like you're is stuck or you have a faulty connection. I had a bad switch on mine that needed to be replaced.

Cool feature that I have yet to really use in the 3 yrs I've had the car.

Default Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply churmsk, I guess i need to look into that...

I need to ask the previous owner, maybe someone has messed with that switch, the plastic wood grain trim panel that goes around those switches is broken and hangs down a little bit...

I hope the shade is just stuck, maybe i can convince it to raise up this weekend..

Mine does the same thing...I'm thinking it may be a problem with jags, or atleast with xjr's. I test drove 3 of them, and all 3 had the same issue. It wasn't a huge deal to me, would be nice if it worked. The one I ended up buying on aug 3rd, would go up and down, but now it doesn't work

The rear sunshade works on my 06 XJ. Its quite useful in the California sun, btw. Also, as my car has the rear entertainment system, it can really help (along with themanual side shades) to improve the view of the screens on bright, sunny days. I've seen otherposts about the sunsade that indicate the thing is just stuck from not being used, also. maybe alittle gentle persuasion is needed. there is a slight sound of a motor when the switch on mine is actuated. Can you hear anything while pressing the switch?

Just love that rear sunshade and use it a lot. It is always up when the car is parked outside and does a wonderful time lowering the heat in the car while driving.

I bought a custom fitted sunscreen for the front too.

Mine makes a noise when I hit it, just doesn't move. I've tried moving it around a bit to try and "unstick it" then hit the buttom with the same results

Default Getting it un-stuck

If any of you guys have any luck getting your sunshade "un-stuck"... let me know how you did it.

Thanks!

Mine worked fine when I got the car. When I installed my H/K Ipod controller I had to partially disassemble the rear seat/deck area to run the wiring. When it was all said and done my shade was stuck. Lifted it out of its tray about 2 inches and set it back in place....tried again and worked fine, still is.

Try lifting the shade out of its tray slightly, then have someone press the button. If it operates fine, then most likely its just getting stuck in the frame, possibly tweaked just enough to hang it up. Check your rear deak to make sure it's properly secured and flat, a slight tweak will cause it to hang up in the frame.

If that doesn't work, most likely its hung up inside the frame behind the seat, maybe a wire is loose or wrapped around the operating linkage.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for all the info about the issues and solutions to the inoperable retractable sunshade. I find them informative because I am having the same issue with my 2007 S-Type. It worked only once but now it's stuck. It clicks when I try it. I could see little movement on the bar on the rear seat deck, but it never rise up.
