Shifter button replacements
Hello everyone:
I was cleaning the sticky goo off of the two buttons (sport, dynamic stability control) with the neutrogena makeup remover. All of the black on the buttons came off too. Is there anything you can do beside buy a complete new shifter. Can you paint them or replace the plastic buttons? Thanks for all your help. Don't use Neutrgena makeup remover to take off the sticky stuff.
Second question; where can I get a complete diagram of the suspension of a 2005 vanden plas? Front and back. I need to learn where the parts I am going to replace are located.
Thanks
JDog

Hi JDog,
I cannot say anything about the shifter buttons.
Regarding your question about the suspension, you can find all information you seek in the workshop manual that you can find here under section 22:

Look under the chapter "Chassis".
Best regards,
Thomas

For future seekers, here's where I got mine (I am yet to replace them tho)
XJ X350 X358 2003-2010 SPORT MODE SWITCH BUTTON (ON J-GATE)
XJ X350 X358 2003-2010 TRACTION CONTROL SWITCH BUTTON (ON J-GATE)
XJ X350 X358 2003-2010 SPORT MODE SWITCH BUTTON (ON J-GATE)

For what it’s worth (maybe not much), a service adviser at a JLR dealership here in Westchester County NY told me that the two buttons cannot be replaced without replacing the whole J Gate shifter assembly. Hoping this is not true.
Since this post came late from my original post, here is what I did. I did not know that I could buy just the buttons. First, my buttons had the sticky stuff. I tried everything. I rubbed so hard that the buttons became cream colored. It is the color of the plastic that they are made of. Finally, I had my car (VDP) in a service place(independent not a dealership) to fix some other things. The guy that was fixing everything else told me why not just paint the buttons. He took the shifter out, took the buttons out of the shifter, and we painted them glass black. You can still see the little red light thru the paint on the sport mode. It worked out better than the original. I never use the buttons anyway. I would have ordered them from England if I had known. It will cost maybe 80-100 including shipping to get it here. For your service advisor in NY, dealerships do not do small stuff like replacing the buttons. It takes to much time. It is much easier to sell you a shifter and make more profit for the dealership. Why pay 26 dollars and some labor to fix it when they can sell you a 700 dollar shifter.
Now for all you Jag owners that have not rubbed the paint off the shifter buttons. I have a 2013 XKR. Some of the buttons had the sticky stuff on them too. ( I saw this on U-tube.) I took a cotton swab with some rubbing alcohol and it cleaned the buttons completely. You just don't need to get in a hurry. Start slow rubbing it. The sticky stuff will come off. After completing removing all the sticky crap off of all but one button, I got in a little hurry. Being in a hurry, I began to remove the white code on top of the button. I slowed down, finished the button and stopped. One thing I have learned, never believe a dealership.

Under the impression of a video of someone cleaning his sticky buttons on an x351 A/C controls, I attempted the same on those two melted mfkrz on the shifter - and ruined them for good. I guess there's a difference between sticky and melted. 😁
I had zero expectations and was determined to replace them anyways, so why not try before sending them off...
And now I am praying they are actually replaceable. (Which I will find out on my own as soon as my new shifter knob arrives.)
