Default Tachometer noise

2004 XJ8 here, approx 80k miles.

I've noticed lately that the tachometer has begun making a rattling noise when the engine is revving down. It also appears to be sticking a bit.

I'm tempted for now to pass it off as cold weather (my first winter with this car; it definitely drives differently in colder weather than summertime), but does anyone have any insight on a failure rate for these things, and possibly a fix action (short of remove/replace)?

Thanks.

Default Sorry guys

Internal gear noise. Live with it or replace it are your only choices. Cold weather tends to make it worse but most likely it will continue even when warm. If you don't drive the car every day there is one thing you could try but no promises. Remove the instrument pack and set it on a bench face up for a day to redistribute the lubricant inside the assembly. May help, may not. Comes out easy at least. Do not set face down, lube can leak onto black face and it will be nearly impossible to get the stains out.

Thanks, Real_Tech for the information. May give that a try.

I have it too, after 12 months I finally tracked it down, I had been thinking I had a noisy clock...lol.
Yeah, its just as it starts to move up then on the way back down.

Oh, is the engine supposed to be rev limited to 4250 RPM in park or neutral ?

I have same (in fact my tacho doesn't always work but ticks and clicks. Anyone know whether - if I buy a used cluster can I just replace the tacho to fix the problem? I understand if you change the whole cluster you have to have the whole lot reprogrammed by the (very expensive) jaguar dealer. In other words does the tacho just unscrew from the back or what?
