Default TCM adaptations and reflash

I tried to clear my adaptaions and reflash the TCM tonight using WDS. The adaptations were cleared, but while the WDS was loading software for the reflash the hard drive failed. Unless I can pull the drive and resurrect it tomorrow I'll probably need to get a new drive and find a copy of the software. Does anyone know if there would be a problem driving the car during the intervening time? The reflash had not yet started when the drive failed, so only the adaptations were cleared.

If the car starts & runs without throwing any codes or error messages, then you'll be fine. Clearing the adaptations just means the car has to relearn them.

VERY LUCKY that it didn't crash halfway through flashing the TCM!

The car appears to run ok, no codes. The transmission seesm to be shifting better - definitely not the same as it was. It still has the ZF lurch, but I haven't felt a harsh shift yet.

I had this done by an independent Jag shop - Clear adaptations and TCM reflash. As part of the service, they attempted to to perform the TCM adaptation drive cycle but that failed (P0783). I was disappointed when I heard that but when I took delivery of the car its shifting was very nice and smooth (very noticable). I have put in several hundred miles since then with no ill effects. How important is the TCM adaptation drive cycle I have no clue.

Have you done the TCM adaptation drive?

WDS will only have TCM software to 2006 level. I think that the WDS will only 'reflash' if the software version in the TCM is OLDER than the WDS version.

If you have a later version already in the TCM I believe you will only need to 'clear adaptations'.

I think it will warn you if the current installed version is later than the software available from WDS but I won't guaranty that.

If the WDS software is newer then it should ask if you want to continue to clear adaptations AND reflash. You might get a message like..... The following procedure will take longer than anticipated, please take precautions to ensure the battery is fully charged..... etc.....

I always put a small battery charger on the car when I am configuring keys, modules etc.....

good luck.

I think you will be fine driving the car because if the TCM software was erased I am pretty sure you would get a display PECUS T

Yeah, it didn't get as far as erasing the TCM. When I first went into the menu I checked under transmission and it said Testing in Progress. After about five minutes it said Software Loaded, do you want to proceed? I aborted it, and went looking elsewhere for the menu to clear the adaptations. I found it under Secial Applications, or something like that. The process took about three or four minutes and I got a confirmation that they were cleared. I then went back to the transmission section, got the same Testing in Progress Screen, but that's where it stayed for the next 20 minutes. I tried to abort, and that's when the hard drive physically crashed.

I have a new hard drive, but where can I get the 3 CDs to load it? If I can get a clean load on the new drive I'll try to post a disk image somewhere to make it easier to reload. Also, where can I get the Ford software?

I have lots of Jaguar and Ford WDS CD software.

I even keep extra HDDs with the software loaded so I can swap drives if one 'crashes'.

I even 'even' have a spare PTU loaded with Jaguar CD 43 if the other one 'acts-up'.
I don't like to have failures in the middle of trying to repair cars!!!!
I keep 2 versions of 43 and 1 version of 38 on HDDs ready to go.
The old HDDs (ATA33) are getting harder to find so get a few to keep as spares (4.3gb to 8gb).

I can send actual CDs via USPS but I believe others on the forum have access to a large file download site.

It would be faster/easier to download and create the CDs for install than to have me copy and send the CDs through the Mail.

Contact XJRGUY and see if he has info on how to get software.

1. [QUOTE=motorcarman;875415]WDS will only have TCM software to 2006 level. I think that the WDS will only 'reflash' if the software version in the TCM is OLDER than the WDS version.

I understand therefore that a Mongoose with recent IDS-SDD (say v131) would be then fully suitable for reflashing the TCM of X350s. Could you please confirm?

2. I always put a small battery charger on the car when I am configuring keys, modules etc.....

What do you call a "small" battery charger? (Jag recommends a 55 Amps one)

When I worked at the dealer up until 2006 Jaguar did not have a specific charger that I was aware of. Jaguar Tech Hot Line just recommended that we put a charger to keep the battery at around 13 or 14 volts with the key on.

After I left the dealer I'm sure Jaguar issued or recommended a specific charger.

My advise would be to make sure you keep the battery from falling below 12 volts!!!!!

TSB 1-186 does not reference a way to keep the voltage up when configuring with WDS other than to make sure the battery is fully charged................THAT'S IT!!!!!!!!!
