Tire Pressures for Dragracing
Hi there,
I have scheduled a trip to the 1/4 mile dragstrip at AAA Raceway/Fontana for Saturday 6/28.
I am running my fuel level down so I will have no more than 1/4 tank when I get there. I have 2 questions for those who have drag racing experience:
1. What tire pressures do you use when racing? I have H rated tires (130 mph sustained), Pirelli's in the rear, Michelin's in the front.
2. I have a stock air intake setup. Do you think removing the air filter for my runs would make any difference? Car is normally aspirated. Back in the day air cleaner removal was common practice at Lions or San Fernando. However, we are talking carburated motors back then and the Jag is fuel injected.
What think you?
Tom

Hi Tom,
From my own limited experiments with air intake modifications, I definitely think it would be worth removing the air filter for your runs. The difference won't be major, but every little bit helps. If ambient temperatures will be warm outside, it may even be worth just leaving the top off the air cleaner housing since the engine bay air may not be much warmer than outside air. Ethanol-free gasoline may also help slightly.
We'll look forward to hearing a full report on your experience!
Cheers,
Don
