Default Transmission

I just got in the 2000 XJ8 VP and when I went to pull the lever into drive, not happening! I shut the car off, started it again, and still can't get it out of park. I removed the small screw, stuck the key in the hole, shifted it into N then started the car, put it into drive and off I went. I'm at a total lose as to what the heck is going on... Any ideas would be GREAT...
Thanks
Curley

Or the screws under the gearbox tunnel, or the solenoid in the gaiter mechanism...

To clarify, will the shift lever physically not move to the D position when pressing the brake or the car does not move when you move the lever to D? I just had the latter problem - took a few moments for the transmission to pump up pressure then it was fine. Turns out I had a small leak due to a pan bolt backing out a bit. Tighten the bolt, a couple of pints of fluid and its working fine.
