Default Transmission shifter-free shifting

I just realized that my shift interlock is not working.

Basically the shifter can shift out of park even without power. The shifter is free moving.

I guess the shift interlock has failed. So new solenoid?

This is for 2004 XJR

Hi krispykreme,

What's the year and model of your car? It's a good idea to add this info to your signature line so others don't have to ask and so you receive the most accurate replies.

Cheers,

Don

Year and model is indicated at the end of the msg...

It could also be the levers and brackets that are actuated by the solenoid, attached photos. If I am correct, power has to be applied to the solenoid to shift out of park? Anyone?

I saw that a few times on ZF 6hp cars. What happens is someone actually broke the interlock device at some point in time. Maybe a bad day or something. I don't know about pieces available for the shifter but we always replaced the whole shifter assembly. Personally, I would leave it alone and never let the kids in the car.

So I tookthe entire console apart this afternoon.

The original owner did an amazing job killing the car.

The entire console area is covered in coke or coffee. Because it was so thick, I guess they jammed the shifter and the base broke into pieces. On top of that the parking brake switch also shows open circuit.

I pulled code for transmission it's showing shifter fault. Also EPB shows all kinds of switch open circuit fault. It also showed anti theft code.

So new EPB switch and shifter is on the way. Hopefully this will resolve all my problems.
