Valve tap
Hi All New Member,
I have a 1998 XJ8, 40 engine with a valve tapping. My question is can I just adjust the one thats tapping and do I need any special tools to do it. Ihave only ever worked onnon overhead cam cars.
Thanks for any help,
Pop

Valve clearance can be adjusted but it is not an easy task and you will need the tool to do it correctly. Are you sure it is valve clatter you are hearing? My suggestion to you would be to check the oil level and what viscosity of oil are you using?
I only just bought the car, so I don't know the oil type, I plan on changing it. What do you sugest? I have no idea on the tesoner either, It deffenetly sounds like only one valve, the car runs great!
As always thanks for any help,

I would say a 1998 4.0 10w-30w regular or synthetic your choice. If you are going to have it done for you ask that you be in the shop when the car is started. You want to be in tune for anything that is making noise and clears up quickly. If you do it yourself be sure to listen. If the wife is in the area tell her what I tell mine this is not the time to talk..
