Can someone please throw light on this problem? I just bought a beautiful XJ TDVi sovereign and drove it home - 480 miles. At low revs there appeared to be a point at which the engine note changed to a deeper note. Notably around 1450 rpm. I thought this was a characteristic of the car at first but when I got home and I was showing my son my lovely purchase, he was sitting in the driving seat with the engine ticking over and I was sitting in the passenger seat and I could feel the vibration coming to the seat. It was characteristic of an exhaust component vibrating off the chassis.
My trusted engineer put it up on the ramp, engine running, to investigate. But all the alignment appeared to be okay. On further investigation, running the revs up to 1450 there was a distinct vibration and loss of smoothness. When a diagnostic was set up using the "Snap on" system for the car, there appeared to be some disparity in fuelling between injector 1 and injector 3 in comparison with the numbers for the other injectors.
e.g. inj 1 showed 850 whilst inj 3 was showing 1100. The variation between the others was less - around 100 so e.g. 900 and 1000. As we don't know what these Snap On numbers represent, the garage are not sure what to make of them - failing injector(s) perhaps or is it a damping issue amongst all the dampers etc. etc.
Can anyone help with this? It has really "taken the shine off" my joy at owing what is lovely car, beautifully maintained, one owner, FSH and only 66k miles on a 2008 facelift model. No other threads anywhere appear to be similar to this.
