Default What is the best engine oil & filter to use.

I would welcome advice concerning the best engine oil to use in my 2004 XJ VDP. The owners manual recommends 5W30 Castrol. My car has just reached the 75,000 mile mark. Should I begin using the high-mileage oils? What is the best brand of oil filter to use? I don't always have oil changes done at the Jaguar dealership since it is one hour away. I've purchased a Wix brand filter when I allowed Jiffy Lube to change the oil.

Default Castrol is good.

BP is parent of Castrol. British.
Like Jaguar.
Cannot go wrong with that.
No need to use high mileage oils until you start burning oil, etc. The 5/30 is fine.
I use purolator but Wix is good.
I put in 6.5 qts and the mark on the stick is "full".
Take care.

Default Common question but tough to answer.

If you are a DIY owner please review this link to the FAQ section.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-change-67711/

It has the part numbers for all the major filter brands available, recommended oil weight and capacity, change interval and "how to pic's".

Oil and filters are really personal preference if the oil and filter meets the OEM rating. Everything is in the FAQ. I did notice that 7,500 miles was the interval you were using and I found the recommended was 5,000 miles.

Severe use and lack of regular changes probably has more negative impact than branding of products that meet OEM spec's. Everyone seems to have there favorite oil and filters combinations. Good luck.

Good advice here so far. Doing lots of short journeys with car engine not getting really warm is cue to change at less than 10k miles, (the factory limit), or 12 months of course.

I agree on the 6.5 quarts at oil changes. Jiffy-Lube's computer recommeded 6.5 quarts. However, the Jaguar owners manual says the engine oil capacity is 5.45 quarts (2004 XJ VDP).

6.5 is with a filter change.
