Default Where does one get a Code Reader for CEL?

Is there a preferred Code Reader and Supplier of same to read the codes for Check Engine Light warnings on a 2005 XJ8L? At the moment I am CEL warning free... but... best to prepare for the next incident.

Cheapest option (tested perfectly on my 05) is the Torque application on your google phone and/or tablet, and an ELM 327 bluetooth OBD adapter on ebay (this is the one I nabbed) . If you're an i-user...sorry, I hear that route is a little more difficult to find a bluetooth solution.

That is an inexpensive and compelling solution. Regretably, I am still a blackberry user, have no google device. I wonder if there is a Win 8 app for this that I could run on my Acer Iconia Win 8 Tablet?? If anyone knows, please reply. Meanwhile, I'll hit the net and see if I can find out. THANKS!!! Tom

Greetings!

Please clarify for me - Does the ELM327 with the Torque application read all the Jag-Specific codes that a generic OBD2 reader can't? I have an Android (Galaxy III), and would sure like to be able to read everything!

Thanks!

I second (third?) the Torque recommendation. I bought a regular scanner for $120 and the legendary Reverend Sam later demonstrated his Torque device for me and it's much better & more convenient. You can read data on your phone whilst driving even. Not that you should take your eyes off the road or anything

Jim, unless you know the jag specific PID address and 'equation' for a specific sensor, the Torque app will only give you what every other generic scanner can. There are torque junkies out there hacking their car's systems to get these PIDs for the more advanced sensors, and then adding them to the Torque developer's plugins, so anyone can 'download' them, and use them. I think there are toyota and ford plugins currently. AutoEnginuity can get all of the jag sensors in one package, but you'll pay $500 for the privilege, and PC software only.
