Default Windshield wipers randomly stopping in auto mode

My 2004 xj8 has had some wiper issues when it is put in auto (rain-sensing) mode. Sometimes when it activates because of rain or snow it stops in odd positions/angles as if that is the "home" position. In order to "reset" it I put it in high speed and let it come to its actual home position, then re-enable auto. Now this operation sometimes works and other times it doesn't.
I have had this issue for a few years. In the past when the car was under warranty when I took it to the dealer for similar symptoms they have just replaced the motor. I does not appear that this is a motor issue but I do not know enough about it to comment, hence I am hoping someone with expertise would comment. I had gotten used to this annoying habit of my wiper blades but now that it is snow/rain season again I seem to have reached a breaking point with it. I would love to have this fixed. Is this fixable or do I need to take it to a shop? I am more than happy to give you any further information if it can help someone diagnose the issue.

I also had the same issue with my 2007 XJ8L. During warranty, I had it in several times. The only fix that worked was replacing the motor. My service tech told me that it was a common issue. It has not happened again since my warranty has expired, knock on wood.

The park switch is part of the wiper motor and cannot be replaced separately. As I understand it, when in auto or intermittent mode, the wiper motor gets pulsed. After this pulse the wiper motor looks for the park position. If the switch is bad it will stop in odd positions as it thinks it has made it back to the park position.

Motor replacement is the fix. It may be possible to take apart and clean? Never had one apart myself so I couldn't say, but would sure be cheaper than replacing.

Thanks Muddybear for your great post. Seems like you did this several months ago. I take it no issues yet?

Yup, so far the wipers are still working without fail.
