Angry Wing Mirrors

I have had a problem with the wing mirrors, which my dealer has not been able to correct. After reversing a couple of times, the mirrors do not go back to their programmed position, no matter how often I save the setting. My dealer thinks I have not been saving the setting appropriately, which is quite incorrect! Any help will be appreciated, as it is annoying to constantly correct the position - might as well not have a memory setting! Everything else works!!

When memory functions go awry, the sledge hammer approach is to do a 'hard reset' to clear the memory function by disconnecting the battery negative terminal and holding it to the positive terminal for 20 seconds.

The problem with this is it resets all learned adaptations to default and there is a battery reconnect sequence required to reset these:

1. start the engine and allow to idle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
2. switch the engine off.
3. restart the engine and allow to idle for approximately two minutes (this will allow the ECM to learn the idle values).
4. apply and hold the brake pedal, select drive and allow the engine to idle for a further two minutes.
5. drive the vehicle for approximately five miles/eight kilometers of varied driving to enable the ECM to complete it's learning strategy.
6. reset the audio unit and climate control assembly to original settings to avoid customer complaint.
7. reset the door window motors limit switches.

If you are confident you are using the correct memory setup procedure and a hard reset does not resolve the mirror reverse dip issue, it is indicative of a possible module problem.

Thanks Graham. I will give it a go and will let you know the result asap. Will be great if it works, and if not, at least I can request a check of the appropriate module!

It is also useful to clean and lubricate the mechanism. The mirror glass can be slid and popped out quite easily for access. I used warm water and car shampoo, with a garden sprayer and soft paintbrush, and lubed with a PTFE dry spray once thoroughly dry (I suspect lube sprays like silicon or WD40 which leave a greasy film, attract dirt and grit).

You can clean and lube the fold back mirror pivots at the same time.

Drape a protective cloth over the door under the mirror first to protect the paint.

Thanks PJohn. May try that first, as it will be quick, although I doubt that could be the cause. But we live and learn!
