Cheers,

I owned a 2004 x350. I thought that I was moving up from my 02 x308... wrong!! I have since sold the 04 and will go back to an x308 next year... luxury, ride quality and looks are the reason..

I agree with the sentiment that the Series III is the most modern "antique car" you can get. It definitely feels like a classic. After years of driving the SIII, the XJ40 definitely felt much more modern, and the X350 feels like a spaceship compared to that. I never cared for the X300/308.

There's no question the ride quality of the SIII was superior to the X350. I'm not sure how people can disagree with that.

I used to think the SIII was the best looking XJ of all, but I've recently jumped ship to the Series II. I really like the lower roofline.

Anyways, I would definitely own a Series III again as a fun weekend car, but never as a replacement for the X350.

I went from a great xj-40 VDP (my first Jag) to a 308 (hated) to the now X350 SV8. I lost some of the classic look with the X350, but hands down the best car I have ever driven.
The XJ-40 - A tank, little maintanance, still a classic look, Smooth, real connolly leather.
The 308 - Still had some classic looks, An early release unfinished design by Jaguar, always broke, put me in the poor house, "Plain Jane" and not real fun to drive.
The X350 - Well you Guessed it.....Awesome !!!!!!!!!! I would be writing all night. I get excited every time I drive it, never a dull moment, never gets old.

I owned a 1994 XJ12 and a 1997 XJ6. I now have a 2003 S-type and a 2004 XJ8 in my garage. Both 2003 and 2004 are extreme low miles. The 2004 is every way a better drive than the XJ12 and XJ6. The 1997 XJ6 sat next to 2004 XJ8; they both look similar and both maintain the classic Jaguar curve. Both of these Jaq still look good decade from now. XJ6 has a sportier line than XJ8. After I sold my 1997 XJ6 three year ago when it was still look like new, I started to miss it and spotted the new owner driving the XJ6 around town from time to time.

Sometimes I miss my XJ-40 VDP. Never smelled leather like that, nor did my passengers. Then I take a run in the SV8, and the memory slowly fades.

An XJR will have more performance than your X308, and will be better all round, but the X308 was a good car in its day. The X308s suffered from two serious problems in the engine, (1) Nikasil cylinder liners that failed, (sorted with steel cylinder liners in 1998), and (2) fragile upper timing chain tensioners, only sorted out quite late in production. Unless you've replaced them, I'd check out these on your car.

The X350 engine is a lot better. The X350 is also a bigger car, just put your X308 alongside the X350 and see !

You won't have a rust problem in Dubai, but the X308s can suffer from this in northern climates where salt is used on the roads in winter. The X350 is made of aluminium and put together like an aircraft fuselage.

If it were me, and this XJR looks good, I'd go for it.

My x308 was very stable and quiet going down the road.. had a real feel of quality and great looks. My x350 was bouncy and loud going down the road... the interior felt smaller and more closed in... the aluminum body is too light to give a great ride... just get caught in the rain and it sounds like a ping pong ball Attack.. I’ll find another x308, most likely a 2002 Daimler Super V8, just have it gone thru for tensioner and regular maintenance and I’ll be happy forever... I got looks and comments about the x308 constantly, but the grey x350 got little praise...

Hands down my X350 is the best Jag I've owned.
