X350 folding mirrors don't
I have a 2005 XJ Super V8. The folding mirrors, when you operate the "full lock" option, tend to go part way back, and when you unlock, tend to come part way out. If you give them a push by hand they will go further out or further in. the previous owner told me that he had them periodically looked at by his dealer.
I don't know what the cause is, but looking at other threads on here I will start by cleaning and lubricating the pivots and any friction mechanism. However I can't see how to take them apart to get at them. How is it done?

I've just fixed this fault on my father's S-Type - same mirrors, same problem and I came across this handy guide complete with pictures that tells you all you need to know...

fantastic, thanks very much. I had been poring over the workshop manual for how to take the mirrors off or remove the motor.
looks like it will be an easy job with an old toothbrush.
is that link for a forum I should sign up to?

The link points to a Super V8 owner's site with some good info but no forum to sign up to.
You might want to have a look at the Jaguar UK forum at XJ Series - X350 Aluminium body though - loads of good advice on there.
Good luck!

I had a go at mine this afternoon. There was a lot of fine white powder and some black specks. I cleaned it out with a spray of soft water with half a drop of WUL, and a soft paintbrush. One of them now operates correctly, the other will park and unpark if I press with my hand in the direction it should go, but under its own steam, there is obviously too much frictiuon or wear and I can the hear the motor whirring in an unsuccessful attempt to move the mirror. More white and black specks are falling out of the mechanism, I presume from the bearing surfaces of the pivot.
Tomorrow when all the water has dried off, I will try a bit of WD40. If all else fails I suppose I will have to dismantle and smooth off the bearing surfaces, and will be able to use a better cleaner and lubricant.

Thanks peterjames.
I followed to link to the Jaguar Super V8 site and it all worked brilliantly!

You might try spraying a lubricant like WD40 into the small hole on top of the mirror.
Using the tube on the side of the can, to get it into the works, just might help.
Be sure to use a towel underneath, to catch what runs through.
Or it will run down the side of your door, leaving a streak.
So far, mine work, i have sprayed WD40, as well as fluid spray inside.
Hoping to keep things moving, only one has folding mirrors, but both get lubed.

I would certainly clean the,m out rather than adding lube to thew corrosiong grit, which will form a grinding paste.
You can pull the glass out by pulling on the inner edge with your fingertips (it is a pop-in/pop-out joint)
spray in lots of water with a mild detergent such as car shampoo, and agitate it with a small soft paintbrush. If greasy, dip the brush in the shampoo. Rinse it all out with clean water. Push the mirror housing back and forth while you wash, to clean out the pivot. The plastic cap on the bottom of the housing slides off. Put a piece of cloth or plastic over the car door first to protect it from dirt, grease and grit.
