Default X350 -- Modern Daily Driver Classic

Interesting article that I would like to share. They praise the X350 as the best modern Jaguar.
David Marks, who runs Jaguar specialist David Marks Garages in Nottingham, also champions the XJ40, but for something more modern that could be used on a daily basis says the ultimate XJ is the later X350, built between 2003 and 2007. “They are very underrated cars, all aluminium, and even the 4.2-litre V8 will do more than 30mpg if driven gently. They are reliable, too; just keep the oil and coolant topped up and don’t abuse them. Then they’ll last forever.”The same applies to the 3.0-litre V6 engine, which will return around 36mpg on a run and with proper care will “go to the moon and back twice,” says Marks, who has seen a few with 400,000 miles on the clock.

I'm on my 2nd X350 (a 2007 X358 Sovereign 3 litre V6 petrol), and both were reliable, but the first did need quite a few things replacing due to Jaguar not doing enough testing. I think the petrol fuel consumption is rathe optimistic. In winter I get around 23-24 mpg, and in summer around 26-28. On long runs, like UK to Germany it will work up to 30 mpg, but fuel consumption has to be assessed "in the round", i.e over a few thousand miles, so it covers all use, short an long runs, and so on. The cars do, however, last incredibly well. My own car still looks absolutely immaculate at 11 years old and 75k miles, and the last one looked equally good and is being driven in the UK by somebody. The only problem I foresee is parts availability in the future, especially the air spring units made by Bilstein. Lets hope Bilstein keep them available !

Our x350’s have been the most reliable, comfortable, classy cars we have ever owned. We currently own two 2004’s, and outside of routine maintenance have only done a few repairs on each of them. Fuel consumption is decent for a V8 around town (18-20 US MPG) but on long trips will return 30+. We had an 06 XK8 for about a year and a half, while also classy and an attention grabber, was ergonomically not as comfortable, more cramped inside (expected), and had more weird gremlins than either of our x350’s. It did also have slightly higher miles, and perhaps the previous owner didn’t keep up on maintenance, so it may be an unfair comparison in that area. But I would hands down buy another x350 if something happened to either of ours. A well kept secret among the Jaguar line up.

Well yes,
I drive like I've got the Queen in the back, (actually she's in the front passenger seat), 3.0 X358. I can get up to 36mpg Imp = 12.7km/L, but only on the motorway and not counting anything at either end. So it's more like 10 km/L with "mostly motorway", or perhaps 6.5 ~ 7 km/L city.

I take an interest in this; my daily driver is a Honda Insight (hybrid). So I use up my "carbon credits" with the Jag, no point in giving them to some other b'tard ;-)

(Insight, about 22 km/L city)

I agree. My previous Jags were a Series III and an XK8 -- both piles of British rubbish. The aluminium X350, on the other hand, has been mostly trouble free other than 1 time when the front air shocks blew and I had to limp to a repair shop. A few minor annoyances here and there but, hey, it's British!
