I am looking into buying a X350 XJ, and one of my requirement is for the car to have xenon headlights. According to Nigel Thorley book "All the Jaguars", all the XJ6 came with halogen headlights, except for the sports, and all the V8 came with xenon headlight. I also thought that Xenon headlight could be recognised by the round lens that is inside the light when the halogen ones look more "traditional"
I am a bit puzzled because I found an interesting 2003 x350 XJ6. The seller tells me that the headlights are halogen, yet, on the picture, the headlights look like this:
On the other hand, I see adds for 2003 XJ8 which should have Xenon headlight with headlights like this:
So am I right to think that the first set is Xenon and not the second and that there is an error in Nigel Thorley's book or am I completely wrong?
Not sure on this, but it is also possible that the headlights have been changed at some point to conventional, possibly because of accident damage, or simple becasue of a broken headlight, as the Xenon lights come in at over £1000 each, and the conventional ones at a mere £450.
Hey there Tophee! The headlight in the first picture is indeed the HID equipment, whereas the second picture is your standard halogen bulb.
I cannot however say that I know much about the 6cyl model but my suggestion would be to ask for a picture to be taken and sent to you of the vehicle in question, or to simply go take a look.
The book may be referring to the high beams which are standard halogens on All XJs. Not sure if this helps but good luck nonetheless!
Projector lenses can have a halogen light source. As much a styling feature as any thing else. I prefer the color temperature of "whitish" incandescent bulbs. Xenon is bright but tends to wash out detail. The lower color temp of incandescent improves discernability. Perhaps this is why amber driving lights are making a comeback?
On the U.S. spec cars there is a sticker/label on the 'A' pillar that warns that the car is fitted with HID headlamps. Look near the driver's door hinges to locate the warning.
Thanks for your comment Guys. I have decided to go ahead and make an offer an this car. We aggreed on the price, I now need some time to go and pick it up.
