Default Yet another 2004 trunk latch issue

My trunk lid isn't being pulled down by the electric motor. It locks but isn't fully closed. It's still water tight but I need to use the key to un-lock it and the remote doesn't activate the alarm. I can hear the motor spinning. I pulled it all out and the gears look O.K., nothing obviously worn out. All I can think of is maybe the main gear isn't engaging the spider gear? Is there something else I should be looking at? Do I need to replace the entire locking mechanism? Thanks for any input. Gene

As usual I was hoping for an easier (and cheaper) fix. I also don't like buying a new part unless I know what was wrong with the old part. And I can't seem to figure this one out.

But thanks for the reply.

Probably the trunk wiring harness has a broken wire...Grab the harness where it goes from the trunk to the body (encased in rubber) on the far right side...squeeze it and wiggle it around and try to see if it closes properly...May take a few times...

Great! I'll give that a try tomorrow.

genec

I know exactly how you feel!

When my boot lock failed I replaced it with an used spare from my stock

of spares (mainly used).

I think the root cause was that the cams were out of sync.

I dismantled the old one but cannot, for the life of me, reassemble it despite many attempts.

You are looking at a beaten man! lol

Cheapest fix-fit an used one?

I owned a Fiat 124 Spyder for almost 20 years and still have a '72 350 SL, with half German parts and half American, so there's no way this silly Jag is going to beat me!

I just bought the car earlier this year and plan on keeping it for a while so I'm not against buying a new part...I'd just like to be sure I really need one first. I'm afraid a used one might put me in the same spot in a couple of years. That's why I dumped the faulty air suspension for a full coil-over replacement. Once I fix something I like it to stay fixed. But I'll look into a used part as well. Used Jag parts aren't that hard to find.

My cat just ran under the couch. Just typing the word "fixed" made him run and hide.
