Default 1995 X300 - rhythmic noise from the front wheels when turning

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum, having just introduced myself in the new people section, but I'm afraid I'm not going to waste time before picking your collective brains. I've had my XJ6 for about a year and a half now, and kept her in very good condition. Recently, though, I've noticed a rhythmic clunking/ thumping noise from the front end when I'm turning. It's not there when you're going in a straight line, but appears every time you steer, at whatever rate you're going. You really begin to hear it from 20mph upwards.

It seems to come from the right wheel area when turning left, and the left wheel area when turning right, and is getting progressively louder. You can also feel it through the steering wheel and floor. I (unfortunately) had to drive it home from Scotland a week ago and couldn't have it looked at before I left, so would really like to get to the bottom of it before it causes any lasting damage!

Has anyone else had this? And if so, do you know what's causing it? Any help would be much appreciated!

(Just in case anyone needs to know, it's a 3.2 litre 1995 XJ6)

My first thought is loose wheels bearings. When were they last cleaned, repacked, and adjusted?

Safely elevate the front end, grasp each wheel at 12:00 and 6:00 o'clock, and give a jiggle. Free play should be barely perceptible

Cheers
DD

Cheers Doug! I don't know when they were last looked at - I've had the car a year and a half. I'll get it up in the morning, have a play, and get back to you. Thank you!

Also check the rack mounting bolts to the sub-frame - especially if there is a vagueness in the steering or a reluctance to self centre.

Have you checked the power steering fluid? Although I would expect that to groan more than knock.

I jacked the car up yesterday afternoon, and sure enough, with a bit of pushing around, there's definitely a bit of vertical play in both of the front wheels. Off to fix it we go...
