I would not jump to that conclusion YET. Have you access to another scanner from a friend to try? They can be quircky getting set up. Have you got the communication set setup right?

Exactly right. Sometimes these units do not automatically find the correct protocol to connect and you have to force them to use it.

The protocol used is ISO9141 (sometimes shown as ISO9141-2)

Dave, which model of maxi scan did you buy? Also did it come with a manual, should be connection advice in there. If not post the model and I'll look it up.

Hmmm, it doesn't look like the protocol is configurable. The manual says that if you get a connection error, unplug the unit for 10 secs minimum and then retry. Have you tried that?

If you still can't get it to work, go to a big auto parts shop and see if they can read the code for you. If that doesn't work you probably have a wiring issue from the OBD socket to the ECM or perhaps a bad ECM

Allan:
I ain't so sure the parts stores read code in England... There seems to be a cottage industry of mobile guys who charge seemingly excessive amounts to read codes!
So Dave- You don't have any mates with an X-300?

Ross,

My local Halfords in London let me use one on my sister's car free of charge. Don't know if that was a one off or common?

Dave, I know the last communications were two months ago but I am curious if you got it figured out? and if so what was the culprit?
Also I'm would like to ask the more knowledgable members here to verify that the X300 does indeed use OBDII. I know it wasn't standardized until the late 90's if so I'm pleased to hear that getting diagnostic info for my 95 xj6 will be a snap.

Hi no sadly the old girl still not starting, i recall not long before she stoped starting the alternator belt was squeeking so am in the process of changing that and if that fails new alternator. If your X300 supports OBDII there will be a port in the drivers side footwell nxt to the radio

The 95 has less capability than the later years, but i have picked up a EGR code when the valve needed cleaning. My Autoenginuity does not interface with the 95, but works reasonably well with my XK8.
I have an UltraGauge for which I made bracket that slides in the seam between the center console and the dash, and keep it permanently connected to monitor the real time temp. It also has an alarm that I set to 220 deg.
