Default 4L80E Transmission Pan Bolts: How to Remove?

hello! I have an X305, but I figured the X306 guys over here could probably assist with this one. How the heck do I get the bolts on the passenger side of the 4L80E trans pan off? It looks like I'd have to drop the passenger side exhaust. Are there any easier options?

You could loosen the nuts on the downpipe at the exhaust manifold and move the exhaust to the side enough to get a socket in to undo the pan bolts. Not easy, but easier than dropping the exhaust.

Before you try anything else, reinstall a couple bolts about halfway up the pan, one on each side. That way, when you get these last two bolts out you won't be getting a transmission fluid bath. Do you need to change the filter? If not, then you might back up and use a suction device to remove the fluid through the dipstick tube. This way those bolts can just go on doing what they're already Tutuapp 9Apps Showbox doing so well...

Hey, I removed mine off my XJ12 with the exhaust in place. Highly suggest you do the same.

I'm going under the car this fall, for transmission service and trans mount replacement. Hope to not have to remove the exhaust, John says its not necessarily necessary! Working on methods to get the car high enough, and rock solid steady. Ramps up front, and (several) jacks at the rear probably.

I like your video John! Admin, thank you for banning that funnyman benmickel.

Thanks Sleek!

You might have to get a crow bar and gently nudge the exhaust one way or the other to access some of the bolts. Also a combination of knuckles and extensions, 1/4 inch best for tight spaces. I even got my speed sensors replaced with the exhaust in place, though that was nearly impossible. For the trans mount, I just dug out what was left of my old one, lubed up the new one, took that bottom bolt off and used a floor jack to press it up in there. Thats all that is necessary unless your also replacing the spring? Mine does hang down quite a bit so maybe a spring replacement is in store for me too.

What transmission service are you up to? Mine has developed some hard shifting, even refused to shift twice but that seems to have went away. I suspect a clogged filter. Seems worse when its cold. I see there are rebuilt and updated valve bodies out there for around 250 bucks. Sounds like the way to go as long as they did it right. I'm thinking i'll swap that out when I do my front end, which is slated for this fall. Anything else you would do while the front subframe is dropped out? Hoping to find a good solution to the engine mount replacements. 800 bucks each just seems like a waste of money.
