Default 94 x300 intermittent starting

Firstly, hi everyone. New to the forum, but been jag fan for years.
My 4L Sov will start one day but not the next or even one minute and not the next. However it always starts with a squirt of Easy Start down the air filter housing(removing air filter first). Once it starts the engine revs drop before picking up again when you press the throttle. I'm convinced it's a fuel/electronics problem but where to start. It's been ticking over fast for a while so also think temp sensor may be faulty. Not sure it's connected but seat memory operates intermittently too. Have an idea they may be linked. Really miss driving the car and would appreciate help.
Thanks in advance
David

Hey _g,

Thanks for jumping in on the shop meeting Friday, you and FJT taught me alot.

I still haven't looked at my '97 X300 idle instability, but it might be relevant to this guy's problem. Mine had an idle decay and stalled when cold, I suspected the Idle speed control valve but went no further. You offered that most of the failures you had seen resulted in high idle speed, not low. Guess what?

Now it starts and idles high, hunting a couple of times like the ECU is re-learning. Still no MIL illuminated, and it straightens itself right out after a minute. This might be the same as this '94, if it's AJ16....only his symptoms appeared in reverse sequence from mine.

Guess I should stop typing and actually fix the freakin' thing.

JTO, no problem.
For your problem your may need just a simple resetting of the throttle pot. Sometimes it just needs to get reset. you have WDS? ids?

Hi all and thanks for the help. Been doing some more 'playing' with it. I think it may be crank sensor as there seems to be plenty of fuel at the rail. Cleaned crank sensor and seemed to be marginaly better but could have been coincidence. Is now back to non starting. Anyone know how I can test sensor and is it cleanable. Rev counter moves slightly when cranking but doesn't alter if sensor attached or not. Puzzles me that a squirt of gas down the air intake and it starts without fail which points to fuel. I understand that there is a 'start' power to the pump and a 'run' power as a separate feed. The other symptom is that it tries to fire a couple of times when first turn key then just cranks.
really want to drive it again, getting withdrawl symptoms.
Thanks
Dave

Default TPS replacement/reprogramming

Hi everyone. Been playing again and have now established the problem is the Throttle Position Sensor on the bottom of the throttle body. I can get a replacement but I understand it needs setting by a dealer. Is there a way of doing it without taking it to a dealer (£100/hr !!!!)
thanks
Dave
