okay i have check engine light, idles at 700 steady, but when i drive i get black smoke and it smells rich. Any one have any ideas before i take it to the shop so they can check the o2's. oh if this helps, both mufflers were shot so i replaced them, doesn't seem to make a difference. The air cleaner seemed dirty so i took it out, that didn't seem to change any thing yet either.

Faulty fuel pressure regulator (leaking or allowing too much pressure) and a skewed coolant temp sensor are two possibilities.

Cracked exhaust manifolds (common on these cars) can trick the oxy sensors into thinking the mxiture is lean....and they'll command extra fuel.

Do you have a scan tool? Knowing the trouble codes would help
