1997 xj6 87000 miles, air went hot so i put a bottle of recharge/sealer in and as soon as i opened the can the compressor(i think) started to make a slight screeching noise, ac was cold for 10 minutes then hot again, bad compressor???/

Sounds like the seal on the compressor is toast. I would take the car to an A/C shop and have them do a vacuum drop test on the system. That will tell you if there is a leak in the system. They will then also be able to do a dye test and prove what the leaky component is.
