Default Alternator Diagram

I am helping my friend get his 1996 Jaguar XJ6 back on the road after many years of down time. We actually got the car started but it does not have an alternator installed on it.
I can see three wires and a plug which he says is for the alternator. The plug and the wire with a boot on it I can easily figure out where they go. There are two remaining wires, ones with a big ring on the end and one with a small ring.

Can someone please inform us where these 2 wires go? A diagram would be amazing. Also can someone tell us what voltage, if any, should be at the wires and when they should be there.

Thank you so much,

Mike

The round connector is to the voltage regulator plug on the back of the alternator assembly

There are only 2 wires in a 3 wire plug

The 2 small separate wires go to the noise suppressor mounted lower by the alternator and is a black cylinder

The large terminal post ( B + ) should read at least 13.5 volts with the alternator turning

Editing

There is a fuse for the alternator excitation

I only see 4 wires (including the plug). They were tied together and my friend insists that he remembered tying them together because they came off the alternator.
So you are saying that only the booted wire goes to the big terminal and (obviously) the plug get plugged in.
I can see the single wire that has a small ring end terminal be for the noise suppressor but the other wire has a much larger end ring terminal that actually can fit over the big terminal. Can I just not use these two wires?

Let me look under the hood in the morning on mine

The schematics on Jaguar are not 100 % accurate

By not hooking up the 2 wires to the noise suppressor you will have problems in engine regulation which confuses things

Same question here. What do you mean by black cylinder? Where is the black cylinder located? I think the smaller ring terminal wire goes under the right lower nut shown in the picture above and is the ground for alternator. The question is where does the 2nd smaller wire (not the booted wire) with the larger ring terminal hook up? It will fit over the larger b+ terminal where the booted wire goes but that doesn't seem right. It is obvious that the booted wire goes to the b+ terminal shown above in the picture at top center and that the plug will only fir into the socket shown in the picture above on the top a little to the left. Where does the second larger ring terminal wire hook up? Any help would be appreciated!

This is the noise suppressor with the 1st side of a oval connector . Another oval 2nd side connector plugs into it containing the 2 short wires with the eye terminals

This suppressor is located under the car near the alternator

The question on large and small eye terminal placement will be looked at in a bit

From memory, it's at the left front bolted to the frame rail. You'll only see it from under the car.

The parts catalog implies that the "Supression module" was part of the optional "premium in car entertainment" package.

That would make sense as this reduces radio noise

But I have the non - premium stereo system and M'Lady P came with the noise suppressor module

Nothing is perfect on the production line or parts catalog

Thanks so much for the photo, it appears someone removed this module from my car in the past and that's why I couldn't find it. May explain the noise my radio produces!

If you source one you will need the 2nd half of the suppressor module pigtail for alternator connections

Thanks again for the heads up, that picture of the open engine bay was invaluable.

The day after I replaced a bad alternator on my Jag my friend calls me up to set up his-but he didn't have one to remove to look at for the wiring diagram! So today I pulled out mine, at least most of the way, to check to see where the wires go. I will remember next time as I took pictures of this.
In any case, based on the nice picture above supplied by Parker2 here is how it goes. The wire with the small ring terminal goes to the bottom LEFT terminal (at least on mine). The wire with the big terminal as I thought goes to the battery stud that the booted wire also goes to. I know that someone else said that the small terminal wire goes somewhere else but I am 100% sure that it goes to the bottom left terminal on the picture above.

I hope that this helps you.

Jomo
