hi all! hope you can help or send me the right direction, my car has developed an obnoxious grinding/humming noise at any speed, from 5 mph plus. almost to the point it feels like something is about to snap off the car, it started like a brake pad sticking. where should I start or should I look into rebuilding the whole rear end? ive read about the rear outer and inner bearings. also where can I get the part numbers? and is there a diy wth pictures? please help!!! thnks

 

Check and see if the brake calipers are sticking causing the pads to stay in contact with the disc.

Also check for any stones that may be wedged in between the back plate and the disc.

 

You should be looking at brakes, wheel bearings and diff.
Start with the brakes first - remove the calipers (dont disconnect the hoses ).
8mm hex key for the pins - flat screwdriver for the securing wire, mind the ABS cable while removing lower pin as it will be cable tied to the hose and there is not much room.
Wear gloves - you will get covered in s**t. inspect the slider pins for pitting/dryness. Carefully try and push the piston back using the pad, it should move back with a little effort. Remove the piston pad and check the dust boot for any damage. If ok, thoroughly clean the pins, grease with silicone grease and reassamble with a little copper grease on the threads. When I did my brakes I honed the pins with wet & dry paper until they were good as new, although in all honesty they would have to be pretty knackered to affect overall braking I think.
And obviously check the pads for excessive wear....

A few months ago, I thought for sure that the right rear wheel bearing had let go on the XJ12. Come to find out, it was only a rock wedged back there! Sigh of relief.... Check the easiest things first!
