I replaced the boot support struts on my '96 VDP today. After spending some time fashioning a tool to release the retaining clip closer to the back seat and failing I thought I would give my pry bar a chance. That worked great and took about three seconds. To place the new one I slid that retaining clip to the end of the strut, placed the strut in position and used a right angle long nose plier to pull the clip back into place.

Evidently there is enough room around the spring clip and enough give for the strut to ease off the ball.

The pry bar is 22 inches long. I think I've attached a pic.
