Default Car Dies

Missus just called. The car ’96 VDP, 122K miles, crapped out as she was pulling into a parking lot, restarted fine after a minute or so - drives fine otherwise, though I have a bit of an airleak after the MAF I haven't been able to pinpoint. I thought about the crankshaft position sensor. I replaced that a little more than a year ago with a new one, which now has about 5,000 miles on it. Are ''flukey'' brands know to be troublesome? I bought the one I have from a national auto parts chain. Could it be the ECU? TPS? The car doesn't
throw a DTC - just dies and restarts after a minute or two.

My sympathies, Roger. I have the same problem with my 96 xj6. It runs great for a while, then stumbles or stalls. I haven't figured it out yet, but I will be working on it and posting up. There are things to be checked as seen in the post link below, and others, although solutions vary.

Thanks Richard, all of the warning lights on the instrument panel will flash and the car may or may not crap out. I'll layout the diagnostics in the workshop manual and go through them step by step. It has to be electrical...?

Hey Roger, does it run normal when it's cold?

Yes, generally runs great.
I do have an after MAF sensor air leak I need to track down and fix. I haven't been able to locate that by spraying starting fluid around the throttle body and boot, perhaps something is moving or a split in that boot (I do have a new boot for install) or a hose opens up under load.
The car generally runs good, A/C is cold; just installed a new head unit, amp and speakers, cleaned and redyed the carpet. The car needs a paint job and some leather and wood repair, but most of the mechanical work has been done.

I had nearly the same issue with my E36 BMW 325, RPM was jumping and the car would die just all of a sudden. I took apart all the air intake manifold, Put it back with making sure everything's sealed good before the MAF sensor and problem got fixed.

But i also recommend to do OBD diagnostics if you have a device handy

I have a Sears scan tool. Thing is the car isn't throwing any codes. After it craps out it'll throw the P1775 and P0727 triggered by the stall. I have no trouble clearing them and the car runs OK.

I replaced the throttle body boot on Saturday, cleaned connectors and tightened all of the hose clamps for that amalgamation of parts installed under the crankcase ventilation system TSB. I also ordered a new cvs hose to get rid of all this and will install that once delivered. Car runs and idles better than it did. I drove it all over town Saturday afternoon without any trouble so...fingers crossed.

So far so good and that was part of the original problem only occasionally would the car crap out. My new CVS hose is on schedule for Friday delivery and I'll replace the TSB parts at that time. I also want to pull the ECM and check the connections for corrosion and so forth.

Default Update 3 July!

It looks like my wife may have found the problem - the audio system I installed. Alpine head unit, Alpine amp and speakers. She drove the car and the dash lights all flashed but no stall. She then drove the car without the head unit turned on and no trouble at all.
I have to check this all out.

Hey Roger, i Can not imagine how the Head Unit can cause the trouble you described. Did you custom installed it? meaning cut into the factory wiring?

BTW - can you please take a look at this video? You mentioned earlier you have replaced the Crank sensor - what was the trouble you had with it? was it something like on the Video? Jaguar XJR won't start - YouTube

The worst part is that your wife found it!
I would look at possibility of having crossed the Alpine backlight wire with the power and or the antenna wires. Also, a floating ground could cause that kind of symptom.

Is this consistantly repeatable?

Do the dash lights flash crazily, perhaps accompanied by by gauge needles going berserk?

If the answers are "no" and "yes" respectively it might have nothing to do with the radio.... and you might have a coil failing.

Cheers
