The gear shift locks in park to avoid the car being started without the footbrake being applied. Applying the brake operates a solenoid under the ski slope which releases the gearshift. If your battery fails, there is no power to operate the solenoid, so it must be done manually. Beside the gearshift, towards the top corner of the surround you will see a small plastic Torx type screw, in the ski slope itself. Unscrew this plug and insert a long thin screwdriver or similar down into the hole and you will disengage the lock manually, thus releasing the gear shift. Not a ton of use as the car will only start in park (or neutral) but if you sort out your electrical / battery issue you will resolve the sticky gearshift issue also. Check all connections etc. and ensure you connected the battery right way round, though a bit late now if you have.
